Timely & Atlas romance

27 posts in this topic

How tough are these issues, especially in Fine - VF condition? I just picked up a nice group of about 100 issues and the majority of the books I have never seen before. Several #1 issues and books that I have to believe are very tough to find, but this has never really been my cup of tea, so looking for a little guidance.. Thanks

The Circle 8 collection was the only large find of high quality Atlas romance that I'm aware of.

About 3 years ago I picked up a 98% complete run of all Timely/Atlas romance. Michelle found a copy of a book that one of her friends needed to complete his Atlas collection. One of the boys here at CGC snagged my Girl Comics 3.

The only real slow-seller was Miss America. This title must be a bit over-priced in the Guide.

As you know, they are tough to find in grade but generally those few collectors wanting to complete Romance title runs aren't grade conscious so they won't fly out the door. I'm always looking for Bill Everett Atlas Romance work ...

Miss America is such a weird magazine/comic hybrid that I think that turns a lot of collectors off.

most Miss America candidates tend to have the opposite affect on me :insane:

There are a large number of Timely & Atlas romance books that are rather hard to find. If it wasn't for that collection Gary acquired I'd still be looking for certain books (not to mention some of funny animal and humor books found in that collection). And I think its around four years now Gary, as I recall having to stop buying books out of that collection when I got laid off.

The OPG and Gerber are way off in identifying which books are hard to find. Most dealers just dabble a little in the romance genre so they don't have solid data to give to Overstreet. And when I e-mailed Ernie about his scarcity numbers several years before his death, he admitted to me that he "fudged" a lot of the figures for the romance genre as he had little interest in it(!).

Just for fun, here are some of the books I acquired from Gary that were part of that collection:

I've picked up a few Atlas/Timely romance over the years and as mentioned they do not appear in high-grade very oftenl!!!!

Here's a couple of nice Timely copies of Joker (OK one nice copy) that I've passed along to a dedicated Romance collector!!! Actually the copy of #35 would be considered an upper echelon copy in this genre and unlike the Super-Hero stuff difficult to obtain.

but if you're after the timely/atlas superhero canon, you gotta have those first 4 mags with ole miss america herself kicking azz and taking names.

Most of the stuff I got is true romance. I think I have 9 of the first 11 issues of My Romance/My Own Romance, and others including Actual Confessions, Actual Romance #1, 2, Faithful #12, Girl Comics #1 & 2, Love Tales, Lovers, Ideal Love & Romance #5(spectacular grade), Love Adventures starting with #3, Loveland #1, Love Romances, Molly Manton's Romances, My Love #3, Real Experiences, Romance Diary #2, Romance Tales, True Life Tales, Young Hearts.

Like I said, many of these books, I have never seen in any condition, and most of these are pretty, solid issues, at least Fine and several in the VF or better range.

It makes me wonder how they would do in a comiclink auction or something like that.

Real Experiences #25 is probably the most sought after book in the group you mentioned. It turns up about as often as Girl Comics #3 and it should do well.

I'm still looking for a few issues of Love Tales, what do you have?

I apologize for forgetting your name, but I remember the business we did, and seeing these gorgeous books again is very cool.

I sold 1/3 of the books to 3 collectors before I ever brought them to a show. What a buy that was!

Those books do pretty well, but after that it's pretty much downhill all the way.
