Maybe I'm just biased towards Baker vs Cole, and have gotten too used to ridiculous prices for everything and have too high an expectation for it all now. Lovely Baker cover vs horror cover by LB Cole Sexy and horrific will usually go for more than lovely. comicjack
RBaumann02
I got Going Steady 12. I've got my two grails now, Cinderella Love 28 and Going Steady 12. I would get Cinderella Love 25 if I could afford it but those are my two Bakers I really wanted. Yorick, MB1952 and Point Five

Does anyone have a clue to what percent of these crazy prices on horror/ violent stuff is speculation driven? I find it hard to imagine there are THAT MANY collectors who just love decapitation or injection covers, call me crazy.

The romance boom has for the most part been a more recent thing. Probably because of the lower prices. I have always loved the horror and crime books. So wild and over the top. It’s hard to believe kids could just buy them for s dime. It’s not just about the covers either. There are actually pages beyond those graphic covers with stories that are fun to read. I have loved Baker art long before he was so popular. But for the most part, romance stories leave me flat. The few romance books Ibuy are for covers mostly. You get a lot more bang for you dime with horror books.

I bought one years ago at what I thought at the time, was a pretty aggressive price. Ha, ha, ha... because it was great art and so suggestive. Popular Post sagii
Always occasionally trot out this one. After the results on the high grade (and low on the romance end) Bakers, I'd say it was one of my better scores. Only one graded higher currently I believe, and by only a point. damonwad, MBFan, comicjack and 2 others

Beautiful colors on a beautiful copy Corey. This is every bit as good as any of his romance covers. On a lot of Bakers, this is a unicorn grade wise. I just noticed the "babe front and center" has the same figure layout (except for positioning of head and arms) to the babe on Crime Reporter 2. sagii

Popular Post Point Five
I was surprised that the TAR #42 CGC 4.0 underperformed last night. Here's the copy I bought from Andy/october a few months back. I love this cover... the rich color palette and the simple but dynamic composition. More than on any other romance cover, I look at this guy and girl... how differently they are drawn and are dressed... and think yeah, they aren't going to make it as a couple. (Something about the autumn leaves falling in the background hits that poignant note as well.) I think this is a quiet masterpiece. sacentaur, comicjack, mustang33guy and 5 others

A lesser graded slab sold on the board for north of $1000. I think it's one of his best covers. Sold my nice copy a year or two ago. Came back a 7.0 from CGC I think. The man is obviously older by the look of the face and neck. The choice of sepia tones in the color design reinforces the scene suggesting an ill-fated May-December romance. I don't know how Baker worked at St, John but did he have tight control over the color design in his covers? The color scheme in his covers from '54 onward are exceptional, almost like a good painting.
