Favorite Comic Artists A-Z

45 posts in this topic

I thought I'd try this out - not a list of all-time favorite artists, but my top pick for each letter of the alphabet. Some letters had a lot of competition - and in many cases were close enough to a tie that my decision could easily change (i.e. Adams instead of Allred, Wolverton instead of Wood) or at least one fave knocks another off the list (Crumb vs. Clowes). Other letters were really tough - surprisingly there aren't a lot of N artists to choose from, and several artists listed wouldn't make my top 100 list in general, they were just the best (or in the case of Uderzo - of Asterix fame - the only) one I could think of for the letter. Still, I didn't have to resort to picking anyone I don't actually like. I'd like to see picks from other boardies - Strip artists(Gould), pen names (Quitely), and real names (Prapuolenis, Kazimieras) allowed. If I were more ambitious I'd include an image for each artist - but I'm lazy - please don't let it stop you.

This was not easy. Rudy Nebres was my choice for "N". That guy is an amazing inker. The weird thing is, he works in a style (overly linear) that, as a rule, I don't enjoy. Go figure.

Great list.

I'd never heard of Chris Yambar - though googling him I realized I'd seen his work.

I thought about Martin Nodell for N - he did some really nice GL covers - but I always found his interior work a bit rushed looking.

Heath would have been my H if I'd listed Herge as Georges Remi.

I actually just edited my "N" choice to Howard Nostrand. I always enjoyed meeting Mart Nodell, but I wouldn't say that he was my favorite artist. I forgot about Nostrand.

Me neither. I got that info from lambiek.net

Prado is great. "Tangents" is just a beautifully drawn book. "Streaks of Chalk" doesn't really translate well from pastel to print. His originals must be stunning.
