you ever have a child hood hero?

I never really look up to others, and don't have that "hero worship" gene. Truthfully, the only sports figure I've ever truly respected is Kurt Warner - the life path he took, his family, his values, and what he gives back to the community is what any celebrity should strive for.

The only person I've ever truly respected is Hugh Hefner - the life path he took, his multiple girlfriends, his values, and what he gives back to the male community is what any celebrity should strive for.

I have got a graemlin just for you, Andrew.

Wanted to be an astronaut, but didn't necessarily see the individuals as heroes.

After reading a book in elementary school, learned about Roberto Clemente and idolized him. Later was a huge Nolan Ryan fan. The last of my hero worship actually caught up to me in college. Hank Gathers captured my attention - leading the most exciting basketball team I had seen, but also wanting to be a journalist (also my career choice). Of course, him dying on the court kind of wiped out any thoughts of following his career to see if he could continue to show the level of class he was at the time.

In all seriousness, I actually get what you're saying here. I can't really remember having a hero, even as a child. I do respect and admire the accomplishments of certain people, and I may strive to do as well as they have done in certain aspects of life, but I've just never exalted anyone high enough to be deeply disappointed by their less than stellar behavior.

Conan, Kull, Tarzan, Charles Napier, David Innes, and John Carter were my childhood heroes... I don't think I ever had an actual living human that I idealized... I knew from the get that they were human, and incapable of being forever perfect... My dad had a lot to do with this, he was always very straight and honest no matter what I asked him, never sugar-coating for a child, but just telling me how it was... Because of this, I learned to take the truth, and accept the short-comings, of everything that life has thrown at me.

I accept the good with the bad, and as long as the good outweighs the bad, I figure things are OK...

These boards are 80% good... and 20% goofy.

I can dig it :cloud9::insane:(worship) (thumbs u

A light bulb went off over my head when I read this post!

I never Hero worshipped athletes or Movie Stars either. But all the Burroughs and RE Howard Characters I Idolized and admired. I read and re-read all the novels 3 or 4 times at least! I wanted to be John Carter racing over the Plains Of Mars in search of his captive princess. Carson Napier exploring Venus, David Innes at the Earths core! And of course Tarzan Discovering yet another Lost city in the Heart of Africa.

I remember watching a Tarzan flik Starring Gordon Scott racing thru the Jungle. I was probably 5 or 6 years old. I literaly stripped down to my Whitey Tightys Grabbing a Butter Knife and running up and down the street emulating tarzan in his loin cloth! The neighbors probably thought I was nutz!

When I was a kid my hero was Michael Jackson. Thriller had just come out and Michael Jackson was the coolest thing ever. I had heard that Jackson had a huge arcade at his house. I wanted to see Coco, I wanted to visit that house. It would of meant the world to me. Let's just say I am happy that wish of mine never came true.

I've had a few heroes as I grew up, but the first to come to mind were Evel Knievel and Muhammed Ali. I spent many a Saturday afternoon watching the on ABC's Wide World of Sports. I know now that they could not have been on every week, but it sure seemed like it then.......

Neil Armstrong still rates pretty high. He's a class act to this day.

Pete Rose was my favorite baseball player in my early teens. I still think he belongs in the Hall of Fame......he never bet against his own team, so what's the problem?

Answer to the qustion on many a collection entrance application: Who did you consider a hero when growing up.

My hero was my dad. He was always there for us before the divorce and even then...

Or better yet.

My hero was and still is Jesus Christ. I believe he has saved my everlasting soul....

Or almost as good.

My hero was my best friend Jimmy, he lived in a bubble and....

Worst of all.

I consider all policemen and firemen to be heroes, one of them helped me get a cat out of a tree so that...

Gambling.Right or wrong that is the big no no in sports. When Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle had a casino deal,as greeters mostly, they were banned from baseball. When those deals ended they were welcomed back with open arms.

Harry Houdini. And I'm still a fan. There's a recent biography of him sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read. One of my first published stories was about him helping the police solve a kidnapping by exposing a false medium.

Just revisiting some of my early posts, and this jumped out at me... TOTALLY AGREE!!!! I have never, and will never, understand how it can be wrong to bet on your own team.

Pete Rose was my favourite baseball player as a kid, haven't watched a single game since they gave him the boot (other than Little League). :sumo:

I think it important to keep things in persective and Honor the Best aspects of our Heros While recognizing their limitations.

That's exactly right. No one is perfect. Mickey Mantle was a truly great baseball player despite his off field flaws. Many of my heroes are deeply flawed, but that doesn't mean that I can't accept the good they have to offer :)

My entire childhood can be summed up by these seven heroes.

Each one at one time or another has enjoyed the top spot as my priorities changed, but they will all remain on my list forever. :cloud9:
