I did see a 9.8 1st print coming up on comicconnect:

http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=487901

How did this get a 9.8? Unless the pictures are messed up it sure looks to have a lot of scrapes on the back cover.

That just looks like poor printing. What baffles me is that stress mark on the back of the book. I've seen countless 9.8's with tiny stress marks, but that one is just way too big.

The more I see this stuff the more I want to crack and re-submit mine just to see if it gets higher. My 8.0 (graded 10 years ago) is really nice and clean with a few stress marks but I see 9.0+ copies all the time that seem to have more than mine (and with OW pages - mine are white). I may make that a pet project of mine...to see if CGC has gotten softer on their grading standards.

+1. I was thinking the same thing. hm

I can't see how any comic would be graded as a 9.8 with any kind of stress mark. It's very disappointing. It's almost Orwellian (some pigs are more equal than others) where it seems some 9.8's are more equal than other 9.8's. This makes a case for CVA to step in and say which one is better than the other. I really don't think CGC should soft grade anything regardless of what book it is.

Hypothetically speaking, If a comic is flawless but has one spine stress then how should it grade out?

A 9.8 has flaws. Why should a spine stress be unacceptable but a fuzzy corner is not in a 9.8?

9.4 or 9.2

Because them is the rules! :rulez:

For CGC it still gets a 9.8. 9.8 is not 10.

Here is a Raphael CGC 9.8 SS on eBay. If you enlarge the pic you'll see a color breaking crease on the spine at about Raphael's shoulder level. Raphael CGC 9.8 SS

I've learned to look carefully at the book instead of label chasing. Buy the book, not the label. (thumbs u

Then what is acceptable in 9.6 or 9.8? ???

You really think one spine stress on an otherwise perfect book is 9.4 at best?

Months ago, the boards helped me discover my #1 "first printing" was fake. I'd like to report that I've rectified the situation:

Congrats again! I remember PMing you a few months ago right around the time you struck the deal for it. Thanks for taking the time to chat about it. Still looking for my copy!

I have a nice 3rd print somewhere. I'll have to dig it out. Are 3rd prints worth slabbing? I've thought about trying to have it signed but every time I think of SS, all I can think of is that will take cash away from other comics I want to buy.

If it's high grade I would slab it, maybe not so much for lower grades. The prices on second prints have gone crazy lately so I'm guessing the 3rd prints will start seeing an uptick soon, if they haven't already.

Speaking of 2nd prints, if anyone has a mid-grade copy they want to move, my PM box is currently open. I'm looking for the Gamestop variant too.

3rd prints are already on the rise. I've seen raw high grade copies going for $65 to $75.

I'm quite suprised at the Qualified 9.8's final sale price on ComicLink. The 9.6 sold for the same...

Are the GLOD's really that dangerous to the value of a book? Even with the accompanying certificates?

Have you ever seen these 'certificates' people have been issued? They often look like they've been printed out at home with some budget program.

They're so easy to counterfeit, and pictures of people signing things are available freely all over the internet. Hell I could dig up a few in a coupla moments and churn out a certificate that looks better than the ones I've seen from legitimate places.

That said, without the CGC or some other group that can actually certify that the comic was signed by whomever......it's fairly easy to fake the hell out of those sorts of things.

I avoid raws that are signed for that reason alone.....and they don't come with a certificate often either.

So IMHO it can potentially impact the value of the book from that perspective alone....but then again I happen to prefer non-signed comics. I hate when someone scrawls all over the front cover. If I were going to get anything signed, it would be inside the book somewhere.....AND it would be where the CGC could affirm it was indeed signed......those GLODS will always leave you wondering if in fact you've got a legitimate signature.
