What the hell has happened to ebay?

41 posts in this topic

You've really got to wonder who in the hell runs that company. The new "My Ebay" page is HORRIBLE and damn near unreadable. And as a seller, you now HAVE to accept Paypal as a payment option. You can no longer accept check or money order as an option. :screwy:rantrant

Be careful with the marketing message from eBay. As a seller, you cannot advertise that you will accept other forms of payment, but if the buyer does ask if you will take a money order, you are allowed to tell them yes.

I called in to eBay since I am on their Beta phone support program the past year, and that was how it was explained to me.

But I was warned you cannot have anything in your listing stating this or else you are suspended for a short time as a warning.

I just got through reading the Official Guide To e-Bay, published in 99 or 00. It is amazing to see how that company started and just shocking to see the monstrosity it has mophed into in a mere 8 years. If you get a chance, read the introduction to that book and take a look at what e-Bay is now. :screwy:

Yeah, every change ebay makes is horrible. Just keeps getting worse. The site was sooooo good back in the day, simple to use, you could leave proper feedback to , and you could actually sell stuff, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

The more they change it, the worse it gets and the more expensive it gets.

Pretty simple concept in all reality.

make it cheap for sellers, and you get lots of good stuff listed, and they can list stuff cheap enough that there are lots of sales

or

make it expensive for sellers, let buyers control all the feedback, so the sellers get screwed even harder, make it harder and harder for the average person to pay for items, result.... less stuff is listed, less stuff is sold, less customers come around to look, less fees come in to ebay....

eventually their business will be so bad, they will either go under or someone will buy it that knows what they are doing.....or someone else will open a similar site with the concepts of the original

Log in tonight and I'm looking at a "new" format, which sucks! I'm selling 13 books right now and part of the fun for ebay was to see my bid TOTALS, which I cannot any longer. Or perhaps I've missed something?

I've got to admit when I logged on to the boards just now I glanced at this thread and I thought it read "What the hell has happened today?" I thought to myself, "dam Shields going all political!!"..

Then I realized it was just about sucky ebay.

Here's what I want:

This morning I was quickly able to see that I had a total of 47 bids on all of my combined auctions. It's easier for me to see the total number of bids to find out if I'm getting any "action" on the items I'm selling. Now all I have is a dollar total, not the "total bid count". Understand?

Got it. I remember what you are describing from the pre-beta days and I agree that it is no longer available, or at least I can't find it either.

There is still an option that allows you to show the # bids per auction, # bidders per auction, etc, but no summary that shows you a total # of bids for all active auctions. I suppose I can see how that could be useful to some sellers! It wasn't important to me, though, which is why I guess I didn't realize that the Beta no longer has that total.

So, I went through the help section and told them the new "My Ebay page" sucks. Here is their form letter response:

I bet they've been cutting and pasting this alot.

lol

Dear Timothy,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to unhappy with the New Beta format

and would like to revert back to the Classic/old version of My eBay.

Firstly, please allow me to apologize for delay in responding to your

email.

I understand your concern and will help you resolve this issue as

quickly as possible. In this case, I am sorry for the inconvenience

caused to you and will be glad to provide you with the appropriate

information. Your patience and understanding is appreciated in this

matter.

I would like to inform you that, as per eBay's ongoing process to make

things better, eBay tested advance version of My eBay (Beta format) on

the site for a certain time frame, and the result which we received was

acceptable, many of our member's gave us specific product-related

requests and feedback about the new My eBay (thank you!). As a result,

we iterated (worked and researched) on the designs as well as the

existing features.

Thus, to provide our member with a better and a user Friendly access we

have introduced the Beta Version on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 as a

whole, so that the members on eBay could get more visibility and easy

access on different feature which they used on the site. The new My

eBay, can also be called as My eBay Preview.

I know that this new change will be inconvenient and might take some

time for you to get adapted but the success of new version will only

come when you as our valuable customers will use the new version and

give us feedback for any changes which can enhance the usage of eBay

site.

Further, a brand-new feature has also been introduced which lets you

organize items into categories that make sense for you. For example,

you may want to organize your watched items into those you are

researching, gifts you may buy for someone, and those you want for

yourself. You can do this by creating lists names Research, Gifts, or

Wish List (or anything else you want to name them)

There is almost nothing you can't do in the new version that you could

do in the old one. Additionally, you can customize your My eBay summary

page. You can also customize modules, Drag and drop, Change the color of

the section, you can view Message section with preview, Collapsible

menus in Buying, Selling etc any many more.

However, this sudden change may be irritating for you, but in the long

run it will turn out to be very good for our valuable member's like you,

please understand that we also don't want to lose our valuable member

like you.

Since you would be concerned about the access of new My eBay as well as

the familiar features which were earlier used in old version. Here is

the link to the FAQ page as well as the help pages, which will clear all

your doubts.

eBay's new motto: If it ain't broke, fix it until it is!!

One thing I'll point out to everyone who is unhappy with this massive redesign. As Donut points out, there is a guide to help find out how to format the page to your liking.

Another, whether you are using IE7 or Firefox, you should install the Adblock add-on to help with the slow response.

There are over 70 graphic images and the AJAX -script takes quite a bit of bandwidth - BUT - if you block out their "deal for the day" flash (and/or images), the page loads a bit faster.

The URL to block is: http://rtm.ebaystatic.com/0/rtms/image/*

Hope that helps!

Larry

Found a link that will bring back the previous version:

http://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MyeBay&CurrentPage=MyeBaySelling=1&ssPageName=STRK:ME:LNLK

Not sure how long it will last, but I'll use this for as long as I can.

It only seems to work for the summary page. Click on any of the links and it's back to the brand new urgh. Damn.
