Megacon - The Flee-Marquette report - NOW WITH VIDEO!!!!!!!

At around 12:45 I was standing in line to get one of those infamous hot-dogs

mentioned in another thread. (A hot dog and a bottled water cost me $8.25  )

I hear over the loudspeaker that Chuck Rozanski will be giving a lecture on the

Mile High collection and displaying Edgar Church's actual artwork. I didn't know

he was at the show and being a fan of Edgar's illustrations, I scurried across the

hall trying to eat my Hot dog and dodge con-goers at the same time. Somehow

I ingested my lunch and made it to the lecture on time.

I walk in and there is nobody there but Chuck sitting on the stage. I introduce

myself and he pulls out this 3-ring binder of Edgar's early advertising art when he

was a pioneer in the early days of the Yellow Pages. Edgar was a big believer in

creating or mimicing many fonts to make his ads stand out. I had several minutes

by myself looking at that book before other attendees started showing up. After

about 15-20 people are seated he starts a slide show to show some of the

other artwork that he didn't bring. Evidently, he rescued quite a bit of it.

After the slide show, he asks who is familiar with his account of the Mile High

Collection as it appeared in his Tales from the Database. Just about everyone

raises their hand, but there were a couple who didn't so he says he will give

a brief synopsis before the question and answer session. I think great, I will

video this. About 15 minutes later my FLIP camera runs out of memory.

I quickly tried to delete some older files but everytime it deletes a file, it makes

a loud beep. I managed to get up and running again without off too many

people, but I missed a lot of the account.

I love the story behind the finding of the Edgar Church collection. I wish I could

have been a witness to the event, but for now we have to depend on Chuck's

recollection. It seems to be embellished somewhat lately, but who knows. He

said that he is not really participating much in the Pedigree Book that is coming

out and that he has plans to publish his own book on the find. He says that he

is seriously considering doing it in the form of a graphic novel. hm

Doc Watson tries to raise morale by singing "Rocky Top". It seemed to work on

Transplant. Gator....not so much.

doc-transplant.jpg

Looks more to me like Doc and Transplant are laughing after they made a wisecrack about how much shorter Greggy's short shorts are compared to theirs.

And Rick looks on with his best "person_without_enough_empathy please" look.

Great report Flee, I enjoyed the read immensely.

always fun to hang and talk with all the fine folks mentioned in this thread (and many of those that are not)...

flee didn't tell you he got half way home before he realized he had left his lunchbox at our booth, and had to turn around and come all the way back for it...

I told him I would have eating that sandwich and mailed the plastic baggie back (he wife gets very upset with him if they don't recyle)

While I was not there, my money is on "yelling dude" I am annoyed already.

I assume he was trying to attract attention to the half off toys at his booth?

lol I was getting to that. Definitely the low point of the show.

I had to get off a toll booth and turn around and head back to the

convention center. I ran back to the booth and then back out to the car. Had

to be a couple of miles total. And it wasn't any lunchbox, it was my Mork & Mindy

with matching thermos. :sumo:

Here is yelling guy.

He announced every time two contestants stepped into the ring to fight with

these foam-covered swords. The first thing Jive says to me when I arrive

at the show on Friday is "Can you photoshop that guy getting decapitated?".

I really enjoyed sitting with Richard and Rick and shooting the breeze not just

about comics, but about music and other collectibles. They both had some

suggestions as to what I should do with this picture. I will take that into

consideration. ;)
