OT - Is this against ebay rules?

19 posts in this topic

Got an email for this:

The Kindle 2

And was curious if the first Kindle was being sold on ebay, and I came across this:

The Kindle 2 (waaay overpriced)

I thought for this price maybe you got a TON of books already downloaded or the capability to download a TON of books with no additional cost...but it doesnt look like it. Obviously if you buy it from the ebay seller he will gladly keep the extra $1000, buy the K2 from amazon and ship it to you. Rather profitable scam...and it seems like it should be again ebay rules, no? I mean if you are dumb enough to buy it from the ebay seller, than I guess you deserve to be parted from your money!

Why don't you just buy the paperback???

Am I missing something???

(shrug)

I guess people like it because its thinner than a book and easier to store than a multitude of books. It is pretty cool...but I think Ill wait till it goes down under $100 before I get one.

That's why I let my iPod read to me.

I love the feel of a book, being able to pass it on to someone else when I am done if I want, and being able to see what others are reading when I go somewhere. I don't get the technology, but I do know they seem to be selling like hotcakes, which is incredible for technology that doesn't involve porn.

The kindle seems most useful to people who like to keep very current with their reading and buy a lot of brand new hardcovers as soon as they come out.

The kindle pays for itself quickly in this scenerio.

The Kindle 2 was pre-sold through Amazon, and people were selling those "pre-sale spots" on ebay before it was released - nothing new here, same thing happens pretty much every single time a new & shiny gadget comes around.

It's not against ebay policy, btw - and I fail to see how this is a scam in any way. The guy is obviously a bit of a insufficiently_thoughtful_person seeing that the Kindle 2 is now in stock & shipping from Amazon, so there's no reason whatsoever to buy one through him, but this is no different than any other seller who's trying to maximize the profits on whatever item they're selling.

Does this mean that every time you sell a comic book the price you're asking is exactly what you paid for it?

I agree I love reading in book format as well but I have heard good things about the screen is easy on the eyes.

Give it time someone will come up with something porn related.

What should be against ebay policy is auctions for pre-released books that go beyond the paypal buyer protection policy. I have seen auctions for book not yet released for over 90 days. I don't understand who would bid on them but the seller doesn't have to deliver the book and they cannot get neg or anything because of the time period.

Yeah, I love to read books and I like the "Real" book in my hands and I prefer paperbacks because of their flexiblity and sometimes it gets kind of uncomfortable reading a hardback edition in bed at night.

Pretty easy to just carry on the book when you're flying someplace.

My wife purchased her Sony reader because her hands tend to cramp up holding books open plus she is running out of space to put her paperbacks.

I'd get one for the same reasons if they werent so dam expensive

I am lucky enough not to have to buy paperback books - my local library has a PB swap section, I always walk out of there with 10-20 books that I just swap back out.

Plus it is something less for a crook to steal, to get broken, to get left in the rain etc. etc.

When's the last time you heard of someone crying over a paperback being lost, stolen,

or left in the rain... Never because it's less than $10 for it.

hm

I travel every week (I fly for a living) so the Kindle is very intriguing to me - until I see the price tag.

I usually read a couple of books at a time, some sort of business book and something else, so this would be a great solution for me, it's too much of a pain to lug a few books around airports, through security etc. along with all of my other gear.

The downsides for me:

- I don't buy new releases very often

- I find reading off a screen fatiguing, I hear it is different on the Kindle, but I haven't seen one yet so I don't know

- The price - ouch, I have a very hard time forking out that kind of cash up front

I would definitely like the size and weight savings as well as having many of my books in one location, readily accessible.

Maybe the price will come down as the idea catches on and more companies build them.
