All caught up on my favorite thread.

Congrats to Jim (cgcworld - or timelyworld!). Killer books.

Nice pick-up Roy...oh, and the Marvel 9 is pretty cool too.

Ponseti even scored a little Toro appearance while I was away. Attaboy Bill!

Now that is a stunner..... (worship)

For me, this is also the best cover of all the early (1-10) Cap issues too. Great to see a high-grade copy. :applause:

Congrats on that one Richard....

Richard love to hear the back story on this one, where did you pick this one up? I don't think I've seen a high grade copy for sale before, maybe a 6.5 was the best. :applause:

IMHO his best Timely covers are in the range of MM's 33-46, Caps 26-46, and the Nedor/Standard sci-fi airbrush covers.

Substitute jungle for sci-fi on the airbrush covers and extend the MM run to 64 - and I agree. Later war era Schomburgs are the cream of the Golden Age when it comes to covers!

Post war I prefer his Nedors over his Timelys - what with their emphasis on GGA.

Funny...I actually enjoy those side bars adn blurbs. They are the essence of the GA for me.

Strange.

I'm with Roy on this one (thumbs u

I also dig the sidebars. Not just on the early Timelys, but on golden age in general.

Heck, I could start a "post your sidebar covers" thread and fill the thing up. It is one of the key elements to most of the books I covet.

Thanks! The #4 is pretty cool but I have spent a ton recently so probably won't be bidding.

I can see the sales slogan now: Marvel Mystery 2 - 13, for the aesthetically lazy collector. :baiting:

I don't think scans do justice to the "busy" covers, nor do they look impressive lumped en masse on a page in the Gerber guide. But, one at a time, in the flesh the best are very, very appealing. It was an astounding experience to see some of the gem's from Timely's (West) collection last year.

...and here you have touched upon something that I've never heard anyone mention before. This obviously shows the shortcomings of appreciating art through a 2 dimensional lense. That's why I don't disregard them...it's a matter of personal taste and how you percieve them at the time you are introduced to them that impacts people.

It's like music...I will listen to and appreciate every type of music and aprpeciate it as a creation or an expression of someone's inner voice...from death metal to ionian chants from the middle ages..but I will pick and choose what I listen to in my spare time.

R.

I have a wide interest in music and think I understand what great music is, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to it all the time. My recent posts in this thread were about trying to separate the artistic quality of Schomburg's work during different periods from the preference for the period. I like them all and would feel remiss if I didn't have examples from each. Luckily, Schomburg had a lengthy career and that means more books and less competition for everyone.

I'm neutral on sidebars -- it all depends on the overall design of the cover and I don't ever recall thinking a cover was inferior solely or primarily due to a sidebar.

As nice as the cover is, the interior by Wolverton is killer sci-fi!
