Rare in High Grade

72 posts in this topic

Of the 13 books that are the hardest to find in high grade, only 3 are superhero (and none of them are Marvel superhero.)

4 of them are DC War, 5 are Suspense/Adventure, and 1 is humor.

As far as the numbers go, keep in mind that these only account for copies that have 10 or more copies graded. Some of the rarest books of the Silver Age have only a handful of copies submitted. It's certainly not because they're "not worth it" they're just RARE.

To me this IS rare, even with your specifications it IS rare.

It's one of the tougher books of the run, but relatively speaking it isn't rare. Rare for SA, I would think, is a book that is tough to find in 9.0 or better. ASM 11 isn't hard to find above 9.0; several have been made available in the last couple of years.

so is there a clear definition of rare???

I mean is 30 CGC books or less above 8.0 consider rare

or do you go lower than that???

hm

I would consider single digit numbers above 9.0 to be rare. Say 3 copies in 9.0, 2 in 9.s and 1 in 9.4. I guess you would have to add the popularity of the title to the mix.

Popularity isn`t a factor unless you`re talking about books that exist, but aren`t seen for sale very often, which is a different discussion. To use Nerf`s example, ASM 11 may come up for sale less often than other SA ASMs because there are fewer of them, and the ones that do exist are locked in collections. Certain books are harder to get in 9.4+ or 9.6+ for similar reasons, but they aren`t actually rare in terms of the number of copies that exist in 9.0+.

Four books published between 1956 and 1969 have been submitted at least 10 times,

without receiving any grades above 7.0.

Little Archie 1 - 0 out of 19 total submissions are CGC 7.5 or higher

Amazing Fantasy 15 United Kingdom- 0 out of 14 total submissions are CGC 7.5 or higher

Tales of the Unexpected 1 - 0 out of 13 total submissions are CGC 7.5 or higher

Star Spangled War Stories 84 - 0 out of 10 total submissions are CGC 7.5 or higher

There are 95 books published between 1956 and 1969 that have been submitted at least 10 times

without any copies graded 9.0 or higher.

Would you mine listing those 95 books when you have the time? I am sure I am not the only board member interested in the results. thanks.

DC has alot of books that are just not found in HG at all.

Yeah, if we`re including DC in this conversation then it`d be easier to have a "which DCs are easy to find in HG" conversation, because most are extremely tough.

That's because they were all tossed in the garbage back in the 60's or used to line bird cages. :baiting:

Population numbers should always be taken with a bit of salt, and not as hard numbers. With re-subs, UNsubmitted books, books damaged/destroyed AFTER slabbing, and many other factors, there will always be a "fudge factor" in determining just how many examples of any given book actually exist, and in what grades.

Something as simple as this very thread could influence submissions and radically alter the census.

And...if there ever is a decent rival for CGC, we'll also have to factor in cross submission.

It's great fun, but always keep in mind that the numbers you see aren't anything more than general indicators of what exists, in what grades.

There is not one single legitimate Marvel superhero book on this list hm

I assume the ASM 1, AF 15 and TOS 39 that are on this list are the pence copies, since there are 9.0+ copies of the regular edition of all 3 of these books?

DC War and Marvel Westerns from 1957-1962.

They do not exist in grades above 7-8.

(Yes, that's a generalization, kids, there are a few exceptions that make the rule.)

I seriously doubt there's a single key from that era and those genres that exists above 9.0. I will be dancing for joy if there is.

They make FF #1 and the other Marvel Superhero keys look as common as early 90's books.....

Unfortunately, there was no Edgar Church around keeping perfect copies from this era.

(And the "white cover" and "black cover" thing is a myth. ;) )

You should see forum member Adamstrange's DC war books from that era. They are sick.

Yes... those 3 were the United Kingdom editions... I've edited the original list.

is pretty cool. Certainly not for lack of trying. Does anyone know the print run of this title?

Just happened upon this thread....interesting topic being discussed here....... :headbang:

Regarding ASM #11...yes...it's a rare book as far as Spidey is concerned "no doubt"...but in the context of this thread...it doesn't rate....I agree among Spidey collector's (and I am one)...it's a tougher book in grade... but a RARE book..no way... Too many others really qualify for this distinction...NO Spidey books do.....not even AF #15. They appear rare because they are hoarded like squirrels collecting nuts...this title has a feverish following (justifiably so...I might add..) ....and this creates the supposed rarity factor here...

No one has mentioned these Atlas books, but they also are rarely found in higher grades....World of Fantasy and Yellow Claw for example...these books are never see in grades above 6.0....and then there is Charlton.....again...difficult in grade..but minimal interest....I don't see many Charlton threads here...but some of their books from the 50's are exciting books....and under appreciated most of the time...(I always hated in the 60's..when you picked up a Charlton book..the inside pages were most odf the time not trimmed..like a Marvel or DC book...they always seemed a little cheaper..?????

by the way.......nice job valiantman... (thumbs u loved the info compiled...thanks

Neither of the titles, World of Fantasy or Yellow Claw

have at least 10 submissions for any issue.

Very low submissions means one of two things:

a) exists in significant quantity, but not worth submitting

b) worth submitting, but does not exist in significant quantity

Obvious, b) represents a desirable group of books, while a) does not.

Does the cost of grading justify submitting the various "non-key" Atlas books?

Are you guys using only slabbed books as a guage as to what's rare? I dont think thats very accurate as there are most likely more raw HG books out there than slabbed. 97% of my HG books are not encapsulated -- and those that were bought CGC, were lovingly de-slabbed.

Well, there's not a census for raw books, so we're using what we've got.

Generally speaking, if it's worth owning raw, it's probably being slabbed regularly as well.

The CGC census isn't everything, it's a sampling... but when it comes to key books in particular,

a low CGC census generally reflects the overall "low availability" of the book.

(Or, in this discussion, few in CGC high grade could indicate that few in high grade exist.)

Without a doubt, the vast, vast majority of books "out there" remain unslabbed. CGC has, after all, only slabbed about 1,200,000 books. That's less than the print run for Spawn #1. There are literally hundreds of millions of comics "in the wild" that have yet to be slabbed, if ever, including a very large chunk of Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

However....since no reliable survey exists that details the copies extant en toto, it falls to the next best thing, which is the census. As mentioned before, the census can give you an idea of what is out there, and in what grades. Just like in coins and baseball cards, the census provides a general idea of what there is, even though it does not account for every existing example in every grade it exists.

After all...there are coins that are so rare, the leading minds think they've got all existing examples tallied and accounted for...then one shows up literally in the DIRT, and changes everything!

http://www.coinlink.com/News/featured/look-what-i-dug-up-18174-half-dollar/

As long as everyone remembers that the census is a guide, not the final word, things will be good. :)

I know that the two books I am going to mention are not "rare" in high grade, but I have been looking for a long time and only one or two has come up for sale and they were very expensive.

TTA #44 and ASM #28.

I'm talking 9.4 and above. I do not consider 9.0 high grade in Silver Age Marvel and DC.
