MH Chuck's SDCC Lament

101 posts in this topic

There also seems to be a tendency to consider the Gold & Silver Age Pavilion as the "comics area" of the convention, without giving thought to the small press area, artists' alley, and the major publishers booths. I truly wonder if the square footage devoted to comics has actually dwindled over the years, or whether everything else has just grown around it.

Was thinking the same thing. When I looked at the floor plan it was obvious that half the con was comics....just not vintage comics...and the displays next to the comic area were offshoots of the comic hobby where you had Hasbro, Mattel, Lucasfilm etc....without comics (or Sci Fi, magazines pulps and the evolution into comics) most of these off shoot industries may not even exist today.

I'm very proud that the all time grossing movies of all time are either science fiction, superhero or cartoon/animation related.

I am not sure what you mean by that, as it's hardly a secret that PG or PG13 action/adventure/fantasy have long been the top grossers, but most of these have nothing to do with comics.

The Star Wars movies, ET, Indy, Titanic, and Finding Nemo are originals, stuff like the Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, Shrek, etc. movies are book adaptations, while the Pirates franchise derived from a Disney ride.

Or to put it in perspective, out of the Top 50 grossers, only 6 are adapted from comic books. (shrug)

Fixed what?

Like I said, it's no news flash that PG/PG13 action/adventure/fantasy/CGI movies are the top-grossing blockbusters, and they have been for about 30-40 years.

I think this goes far, far, far beyond just funny book movies, to an overall fanboy assault on SDCC from all levels of media, from TV to online, and companies hawking everything from toys to books. It's morphed into a world-wide nerdfest, and funny books had almost nothing to do with it.

Over the past decade or so, companies have identified young male fanboys as a serious revenue stream, especially in the online world. Selling not only the movie, but the DVDs, toys, collectibles, weapons, armor, whatever to these poor suckers made companies billions, and many targeted fanboys directly.

What the SDCC really comprises, is a huge grouping of the most vocal fanboys, combined with the news media targeted at this same demographic. It's like filling the convention hall with sheep and asking the wolves if they want to set up a booth. :insane:

sadly chuck has this one right and i don't think it's going to be five years before comics are a complete afterthought at SDCC

Which is pretty sad. I had dreams of someday going to SDCC because it was THE premier comic con in the country. Every year though it seems like more and more people say that SDCC is not the best place to buy comics.

I don't know. I did better this year than the last two.

You were a busy boy. Saw you several times, but didn't stop to say hello because you seemed buried in funny books.

Didn't see you for 2 straight years. Booked at the Best Western yet?

Getting harder and harder to get a room.

You saw me last year. We had a chat outside the Best Western. I tried to book 2010 when I checked out Saturday morning, but they wouldn't let me book that far ahead this time.

:sorry:

I booked a placeholder reservation at the Embassy Suites but I will fight when the hotels open for a better rate.

Based on this year, if I get screwed, there may be openings when people cancel in June/July

I have been getting Chuck's emails for many years and this is not the first time that he has commented on the "Hollywoodization" of SDCC. I seem to remember that he hit that note very hard maybe 5 years ago.

I am in LA and have only gone to SDCC twice, both in the last 10 years. Since I have to bring my family and it ends up being very expensive I do not plan on going again at anytime in the near future.

I was very disappointed when they cancelled Wizzard LA. I had attended for the 2 previous shows and I thought that that was a perfect mix for me. I may have to start going to the LA Comic con at the Shrine again.

I went to the last WWLA. I walked the hall in half an hour and was done. If I hadn't arranged to meet someone there to purchase a book from them, I would have walked away empty-handed.

I picked up a bunch of great books from Steve Ritter for my Four Color trade project. I ended up with several file copies as well as about 10 Crippen books.

I was only planning on going on Saturday, but Steve gave me a pass and I brought another box of stuff and traded more with steve and others on Sunday.

I also enjoyed working with Mr Bedrock and maybe another half dozen + dealers.

we prepaid for next year... some folks did great at the show, if you had the right mix of books... chuck bringing 10 pallets of trades that you can get anywhere is not the best use of his space, IMO, but he is correct that if you compare space given to comic dealers (vintage) versus total floor space, well then it has been a fraction (like 5%) for years already
