Comics and my wife............

67 posts in this topic

If she hates to read then why bother?

Because it interest me......Its called compromise.

Oh, but that is double compromise. May be asking for too much.

Reading is sort of intrinsic to the enjoyment of comics. It might be worth a try but I wouldn't expect much out of this experiment.

YMMV of course. (thumbs u

My daughter hates to read but got hooked on Mouse Guard. Sometimes the joy of reading just needs the right subject matter. Kudos to her for being open-minded enough to give it a shot.

Not harshing you. My wife won't touch a comic with a 10 foot pole yet she lets me have my budget and my comic room. She has her budget and has spent an ungodly amount on scrapbooking supplies (My God she has a lot of colorful paper). I dont begrudge her that, for sure.

Thats our compromise I suppose.

I have a comic/game room and a comic budget also. I'm pretty sure my comic budget is a lot smaller than yours lol My budget feels like a childs allowance.

Forget comics...if she's looking for a hobby, try getting her interested porn...it would be a win-win situation for you! ;)

Yeah. That will not go over well. Peoples signature lines are the extent of my porn.

My suggestion would be Peter David's Hulk run - simple enough stories well told and very accessible to the newbie reader, with enough soap-type elements and humor to please the missus.

Failing that there's always the Authority. Plenty of gruesome action and sledgehammer wit.

I don't expect much, just the simple fact that she is willing to try is enough for me. I don't expect to us to be having detailed conversations about comics lol Unless I'm the one doing all of the talking lol

but someone who doesn't like to read books might be more interested in reading comics

heck, isn't that why they were developed? to provide some fun mindless entertainment for someone who didn't want to commit to reading a 200 page paperback?

Fables 1 - 10? My wife, who usually frowns upon a lot of my comic geekiness, seemed kind of interested in the plot when I summarized it for her.

That would be my first suggestion for any non-comic reader. Pick up the first two trades and see if she likes it.

I can give you some Batman suggestions if you are hooked on only superhero recommends.

My girlfriend collects and reads Sailor moon comics...though she is far more interested in watching Japanese Episodes on her computer at work haha. A lot of good suggestions here including Fables and Bone. I've been trying to get my girlfriend started on Rasl so she can read it as I read it but no luck!

A fun read for a new comic reader always seems to be the Death of Superman graphic novel. Everytime someone noses around my comic room I lead them to the graphic novels so they don't touch my comics. It's usually a book they either haven't read in years, or something they've always wanted to read.

Thats the problem. She doesn't want to read trades. It looks to much like a book to her. I have about 60 trades at home. She prefers the single issue books because it looks smaller lol
