For what it is worth, I believe BATMAN #1 is under-rated. It is the first appearance of the Joker and the Catwoman. The Joker is perhaps the greatest villian of all-time and we all love villians.

There is an opinion out there that BAT#1 is a common book. That might be so compared to a Superman 1 but availability (supply) isn't a bad thing. That helps create a market. Can't own something you can't find. Besides, it really isn't a common book, esp in high grade (unrestored).

Books like Marvel #1, All-American 16, Captain America 1, More Fun 52, etc might be scarce compared to Batman 1 but those characters don't have the popular culture appeal (Demand) that Batman has and moving forward into time Batman and the Joker will live on in spades. Capt America, Green Lantern, human Torch, etc will always be second/third tier characters. One just has to see the record breaking $$$ #s that came out of the Batman movies.

I think in 15-20 years, the 5 most expensive comics will be:

Detective 27

Action 1

Amazing Fantasy 15 (don't be surprised to see other silver age marvel books make the top 10)

Batman 1

Superman 1

For near-term investment, I would look at

Detective 140, Detective 168 and Batman 47. They are tough books and will benefit from the Batman franchise.

Batman 1 deserves more love. It is an important book. Superman 1 is just a reprint of the first couple of Actions with a new pin-up (yawn). IMO, Supply isn't the most important factor, DEMAND is and BATMAN is the most popular comic book character and will continue to be for years to come.

just my 2cents :0)

good take Eric. I'm still unsure of who is more popular though--Batman or Superman---they have always seemed neck in neck during my lifetime..perhaps, the killer movies on Batman have given him the edge (thumbs u I certainly favor the Dark Knight over Supes....

I agree that superman 1 is much rarer than batman 1 but the reality is sup 1 is a reprint and batman 1 introduces 2 major villians. collectors put a huge emphasis on rarity when they should focus more on content. time will tell but Sups popularity is slowly falling and Batman's continues to skyrocket. having young kids today, it is all about Batman, Spider-Man and Wolverine and they could care less about comics.

ps superman 1 might well be in the top 5 rarest books in fine or above. unrestored of course.

I agree as a general rule... but, the "problem" is that for all the time folks have collected comics, Supes 1 has always been in more demand than Bat 1 (at least from my experience), and supes 2-10 seem to be, even to this day, in more demand than batman 2-10...and, far less readily available in comparable grades/prices... not nec my opinion, but the market has tended to think that way...

on a sidenote, no less than 8 copies of bat 1 in 6.0 or higher have been available in the last few years (including 2 in 9.0!)...not one copy of superman in better than 5.0, I believe, has publicly been available in the same time frame, as a reference/support on scarcity (thumbs u

Eric, I've been saying this for years. Wrote articles on it, shouted it from the rooftops of large metropolitan centers, sang it on street corners..... Nice to hear the echo after all these years (worship)

totally agree here, I've been traveling to LCS this year (those that are less than an hour or so away), and they all have a few early GA Batmans #s 2,3,4,6,7,8,etc. but NO issues of early GA Supes under #30. I think demand is about the same, however, supply may not be which is weird considering that DC would have had about the same print run on both of these titles. I like both Supes and Bats.

however, he still has some GA Batmans under #10.

I will always be an Action man, however, I do have quite a few of them, and no Tecs or Bats, so I thought I would diversify and buy a few of the Tecs/Bats books that I like. I've already obtained a low-mid grade Tec #44, and would like to get a few more along with maybe a Bat #9 or #11. I have always liked Batman and Superman, everytime I try to buy a SA book, like AF15 or SC22 (which I"ve since sold) I always sell it to buy more GA books. lol
