What are the toughest Silver/Bronze books in 9.8?

121 posts in this topic

Any of the 8/80 to 12/80 Whitmans. Read by kids, not really kept by collectors. Some of them have no graded copies recorded or have copies graded over 9.6.

Beep Beep Roadrunner 91,92,93

Beyond the Black Hole 4

Bugs Bunny 221,222

Chip N Dale 67,68,69

Daffy Duck 130,131

Daisy and Donald 45,46,47

Donald Duck 221,222,223,224

Huey Dewey and Louie 65,66

Little Lulu 260,261

Looney Tunes 33,34,35

Mickey mouse 207,208,209

Pink Panther 75,76,77

Popeye 158,159

Porky Pig 97,98

super Goof 60,61,62

Tom and Jerry 330,331,332

Tweety and Sylvester 105,106,107

Uncle Scrooge 179,180,181

Winnie the Pooh 20,21,22

Woody Woodpecker 190,191

How many of these are seen every now and then still sealed in their original packages? I would imagine there are a few sealed packs still in the hands of dealers or collectors that would represent some HG specimens.

More oddly difficult bronze Marvels to find in 9.6 or better:

Captain America #121 (0-9.8s. 2-9.6s)

Daredevil #124 (0-9.8s, 2-9.6s)

Sub-Mariner #43 (0-9.8s, 3-9.6s)

Werewolf By Night #18 (1-9.8, 1-9.6)

Werewolf By Night #21 (0-9.8s, 2-9.6s)

Werewolf By Night #35 (0-9.8s, 2-9.6s)

Werewolf By Night #42 (0-9.8s, 0-9.6s)

This is a great thread. I never thought of many of these books as being tough to find in very hign grade. So I went looking for some of these. First one I picked out was this one. I think it has a shot at 9.8.

Pretty much any Champions in 9.8 will be tough to find since I have most of them. #s 2, 4, 16 & 17 were by far the scarcest. There are only 1-2 9.8s for most of the issues.

That could be because nobody collects them except me (shrug)

Also JIM annual #1 has only 1 9.8 & 3 9.6s (17 copies over 9.0), very tough book to find period.

With 6 color breaking spine stresses you'd be closer to 8.5/9.0 than 9.8, but still a very nice copy (thumbs u The black area along the spine causes every defect to stand out

GL #76 ........... end of discussion

People are paying $30k for 9.6 copies because 9.8 copies do not exist :o

Strange why a 9.8 wouldn't exist.... hm

I don't find it strange. Unless the book was bagged and boarded as soon as possible there's a chance at some spine corner blunting and what not just from sitting in a box that gets moved around every few years. The book is pushing 40 now. Dark covers show everything. There are a lot of things going against a book basically staying perfect for 40 years. so it helps a lot if it was a book that was bought in quantity, hoarded and tucked away for many years, which GL 76 was not. the kirby books, shazam, the shadow, etc...those were books that were invested in right off the bat, so there are likely going to be more 9.8s. ditto for most BA marvels.

I have seen CGC be more foregiving when the color breakingness of the spine tick was on a dark back cover and you didn't see so much from the front...I'm talking about a 9.4 late 80s book too. those are too readily apparent and big on the DD 124 to make 9.6 or 9.8 and I'd doubt 9.2 or 9.4.

i wish it would make the higher grades, i'd be a much richer man given tha I have a lot of books like that (but then again, so does everyone else). I tend to call them a VF or VF+ to be on the safe side.

i don't know how Nik (RIP) found these gems raw and got all those 9.8s. I buy a lot of books thinking they're really perfect and I get them home and look really hard...I just went through 2 magazine boxes of "high grade" books I have segregated from like 1970-1978 and I think maybe one or two have a shot at being 9.8s.

batman 238 100 pager. 9.4 I bought for $2100.... no 9.8's or 9.6's.

That is an insane price for that book :o

This would make it the most valuable Bat book of the bronze age

Way more valuable than Bats #200, 227, 232, 234 or 251 or TEC 400

How about this. I have a Batman 251 and a batman 237 both in 9.8 and i will trade them both for a Batman 238 in 9.8.....

All you people should stop collecting bronze Batman books

Don't know know that DC comics suck?

You should be collecting Marvels ......... those are a lot better.

Plus it wasn't hoarded by Adams collectors because there weren't any Adams collectors yet....and as I recall, many of the GL readers were not thrilled with the new direction and actually dropped the books.GOD BLESS...

Has anyone mentioned Marvel Spotlight #5. It looks like the first 9.8 just popped up and is going to be in the November C'link auction.

It's not exactly a prime example but I wonder how high it's going to go.
