What other collectible has as devout a following?

51 posts in this topic

I was just thinking to myself that Comic Collectors have to be the most loyal bunch of fans of any collectible. Think about the amounts of money we spend, the time and energy not only on these boards but also at shows/stores, etc. it's pretty impressive.

Now the question is, what other collectible has as devout a following?

Personally, I like to save my change that is older than 30 years old and I do have a few stamps and a few thousand baseball cards but I by no means "collect" anything besides comics and don't know anyone that really collect anything passionately. What do you guys think? Are comic collectors the most die hard?

Dave,

There are numerous other collectors out there. I don't know if you can compare the different interests in one being more serious then another, but here are a few examples off the top of my head. You have:

Civil War Memorabilia

Military Memorabilia

Antique Advertising

Toys (Modern/Antique)

Comic Character Memorabilia

Movie Posters

Pinback Buttons

Political Memorabilia

Postcards

Autographs

Ephemra (term for anything that was thrown away i.e comics, antique advertising, etc.)

Paper Money/Bank Notes

Mechanical Banks

Antique Bottles

I'd say old vinyl/CDs. Record collectors are as passionate and obsessive about their hobby as comic fans. Didn't High Fidelity ring any bells when you saw it?

Agreed. Record collecting is still more important to me than comics. sorry.gif As for hi-fidelity.....the classic scene about "I just called to say I love you" is just so true plus I can tell you the emotional attachment I have to almost 70% of my albums.

For the record...........I store my albums alpabetically.

All of them. Collectors almost by definition are obsessive. You name the collectible, I'll find you the core group of obsessed fans. As much as you and I would like comics to be "different" in that regard, they're not.

I am a history nut. This leads to me having a wide verity of collections. Today, I collect comics for more historical reasons than entertainment. They represent my “fun” side of history. I also like to share my finds with other people and they really seem to enjoy them.

In my office, you will find.

Framed Comics

Framed notes from civil war Confederate to those printed by the last German Kaiser.

Fossils – No large animals yet, but I am working on it (just plant and insects so far)

Cancelled stock certificates for JP Morgan Companies. The favorite being the company that owned the Titanic and is dated a year after it sank. I am about to start looking for other legendary tycoons as well.

Old US stamps and letters

Advertisement and political buttons (though Snoopy and JR Ewing for President are the best 2)

US coins as well as some from other countries

Military insignias, medals and other related items.

Newspaper clippings.

Of course there are other things I collect. You will find a shelve filled with toys and my dinning room is filled with autographed pictures of actors and other performers.

Excellent double-entendre!!!!!!!!! 27_laughing.gifthumbsup2.gif

Also - when filing alpha, I assume by artist? How do you handle numbers - like the group 10,000 maniacs?

I have two 10,000 maniac albums (saw them live in 92 at Carrowinds in Charlotte cloud9.gif), they are stored under T, 666 is stored under S,etc etc. Some variations occur where bands change names but fundamentally stay the same. For example....Rascals albums are stored under Y for Young Rascals, Street Angels are stored under A for Angels (American pressings of the OZ group Angels had to bear a different name as Angels had already been taken) and Flowers is stored under Ice House.

Never mind "High Fidelity" - if you're a vinyl collector, you must see "Ghost World" !! Beyond the fact that it's derived from a comic book, the Steve Buscemi character (who collects early Jazz/Blues records) is priceless.

Oh, and no one has mentioned barbed wire... those barbed wire collectors are fanatical !!
