Before color - Notice how terrible the blacks look?

Batsbefore_zps838f064d.jpg

After color adjustment - black added with the contrast up, Sharpness almost all the way up, Brightness turned down a little.

Wow but is that actually what the book looks like in hand? My thinking is I don't want anybody thinking the color is far better than what is in the scan. Like some of these guys on flea bay who take a tanned white cover and make it look pure white.

The book in hand is very bright in itself, you don't want to pump the color up so much it doesn't look real. Just bring the black up enough that all the areas are black and add some brightness to it if it's too dark. Careful you don't lose the color blue on the label, I usually keep an eye on that. Bring up the sharpness so you can actually read the writing and it'll bring out the details in the art.

Unfortunatley the only setting I can change is color saturation. With what I have there is no specific colors to enhance. First in maxed out saturation. 2nd is the old pic. I am not so worried about the color as long as it is close. But I want to know how people are getting rid of the glare cause by the inner well

Kevin do you have advanced HP Software? Because I bought my scanner used and I only have whatever came with it. Can you suggest a HP download if there is one?

I know what you are saying in terms of color adjustments but I can't find anywhere to fine tune individual colors.

Your scan looks closer to my top scan with the saturation turned all the way up. But I can see in yours that the black is toned down a bit

Hi all,

Been following this thread for a while. It seems like most of the suggestions are around getting second-hand scanners. I haven't tried these models but I'm glad they are working out for folks. What I'd like to know is if anyone has ideas "if money were no object" - i.e. professional imaging equipment, high-end scanners etc.

Took a slab to an imaging studio in Manhattan and they wanted to charge me $30 an image - did not do this but I wondered if anyone knows what type of machines they would likely be using?

I've been taking mine to Staples to have them scanned and they come out fairly good. One Staples in my area just got a new machine (Xerox) and they are coming out even better.

Again, curious about more expensive solutions just out of curiosity - what does CGC use, does anyone know?

If money weren't an object i'd still get an HP 8300. When it came out a few years back it was a $500 MSRP scanner. Now you probably pay more for shipping than the scanner itself. I scanned a negative with it as well and the result was f-ing amazing in my opinion. I'll post some sample scans and settings in a bit.

I got my scanner off of ebay. It didn't come with any of the software at all. I had to download it from the HP site. I have a mac so the installation required a few more steps to get it to work with the current OS but all the other downloads seemed pretty straight forward.

I bought my scanner off of amazon used and then just went to the HP website and downloaded the latest driver. I'm using an IMac. All I do, I click on a picture and at the top of my desktop it switches to "HP Scan" I click "Tools" Click "Adjust color" from the drop down menu and use the sliders back and forth, most of the time, I only use "Contract slide to the right and Sharpness slid to the right.

Got mine off of Amazon used for like $120 (Not paying $800 brand new) I had to buy the power cable and USB cable as well. Then just downloaded the driver. I work in printing so I know how to color :)~

This better? Just gonna have to live with a little glare.

Regarding the glare, try to flip the book around/upside down on the glass. Sometimes you'll have glare in different spots and not in others. I just combine the two images sometimes!

I find with the glare I apply just a bit of pressure to flex the case a tad it takes out most of the glare. I got flamed hard by guys saying you could break the glass and mess up the head which you can. I am talking real gentle.

I am thinking of making a slight templates to add just a little more pressure maybe some memory foam velcroed to the lid

Then I guess we may have the same thing I just don't see a color scale as I slide the sliders

I actually don't see them either. Didn't even know they existed. I see the adjust at the top right, but if that only comes on after scanning, I've never noticed since i do all my adjustments outside the scan app.

The only settings i'm using is a custom scan profile. With the following settings:

Capture tab:

Mode: Color

Resolution: 200 pixels/inch

Regions: straighten checked

Adjust tab:

Color: Boost colors checked

Exposure: Adjust exposure checked, Adjust black/white threshold checked

Noise: Sharpen checked

Enhance tab:

nothing checked.

I do vary minimal adjustments after the scans. Usually only cropping with the occasional adjustments to blacks and color saturation.

Oh and i always scan with the lid open. I prefer the black background over the white background

Here are a few examples

Walking-Dead-25.jpg

A few things to note on some of the scans the glass was dirty, because I didn't really bother cleaning the glass and wiping down the slabs between scans. It's not really noticeable in the small sizes that I use so i didn't bother. Also, the thicker slabs are harder to get the glare off of, as you can see on the Infinity #1.
