X-MEN #1 club

This is the next club I really wish to join! Probably in a couple months I'll be looking, if any of you will be seeking an upgrade by then.

X-Men 1 isn't overlooked, but it is underrated. FF kick started the Marvel Universe, but it's hard to argue against the X-Men for having shaped it like no other comic.

Hey X-Men #1 Club,

I have a question seeking opinions please...

I own a raw X-Men #1, mid grade - around 5.5-ish (I think and low because of marvel chipping - I understand the CGC peeps do not like marvel chipping - oh well). Anyhow, my question is this - my copy is Pence copy, i.e. UK issue - how do you feel about pence copies?

Cheers,

Waylander

There are a lot of collectors who will only collect the cents copies, some who will collect either and a few that collect them because they like them. The gap in value between cents and pence copies has closed a bit in recent years and depending on what the comic is and what grade it is, my opinion is that pence copies usually run about 2/3 of value of cents these days.

Here's a link to a recent thread in the Bronze forum discussing them. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5140496#Post5140496

Quick story about my X-Men #1.

I bought it from Comicbook World in Kentucky, it was signed by Stan back in 1976. I was told the only way to submit it and not have a green label was to get Stan to trace his signature and submit it for SS. So I waited a couple months maybe a year till Stan was signing books at the Detroit Fanfare.

In the mean time my buddy came over from North Carolina and wanted to see the book. So I got it out and set it down in front of him on a fold out serving tray in my living room. I went into the kitchen for something while I was explaining how I was gonna get it signed on Halloween, at that time Jason says, "Man, I can't believe how nice it is on the inside"

Panic struck me as I had never taken the book out of the mylar, in fear I would damage it. I run to the living room to see him holding it in one hand and flipping through all the pages.

Boy was I glad he did that, since he had it out I went ahead and read it.

I of course knew the story from the reprints, but had Jason not come over that day I would have never enjoyed actually reading my X-Men #1

Great story! Thanks for sharing!

i am willing to bet that 6.5 won't stay as 6.5 long. I think it will resurface shortly as a 7.0 ow after some cpr.

as far as the 9.4 didn't crack $100k, lets see how the next 9.4 do. One book doesn't say much about future trend....just as the $137k 9.4 white copy that Doug sold. White page is very rare with X-men #1.

That being said...2 years ago, we had 6 9.4 slabs and then starting from the Mound copy, census has increased to 12...freaking 12 9.4 books...is there another mega Silver age keys with SO MANY uber high grade books?

It is remarkable that when I bought my 8.5 copy way back in 2003, there were 37 total copies from 8.5 to 9.8. Fast forward 8 years, and now we have 78 copies from 8.5 to 9.8.....more than double.
