Welcome to the first ever Survivor Series for Silver Age DC Superhero comics!

 

The goal is to determine the greatest Silver Age DC Superhero cover of all time. We will be voting off our 30 least favorite covers from the list provided.

Let's have lots of chit chat as the rounds progress.

 

This is an 11-round marathon. These rounds will last 2 days each. We'll vote off 39 in round 1, 30 in round 2, 30 in round 3, 30 in round 4, 30 in round 5, 20 in round 6, 10 in round 7, 5 in round 8, 2 in round 9, 1 in round 10, and then the final showdown to crown our champion.

Interesting facts about round 1:

 

• 14 of the first 15 were voted off.

• For titles beginning with the letter "A", there were 30 entries. Now 4 remain.

• Only 3 books had zero votes against them: Showcase 14, Showcase 27 and Showcase 29.

List is still too cumbersome, but that won't be the case much longer.

these are very interesting stats... given the significant skewing towards the beginning of the list (basically every book under "A") shouldn't we question the future validity of results? Not that these results do much but define the boards taste at this point in time, but even if the reviewers start at the bottom (for round two), the list itself is impacting the selections rather than the merits of the books, a big no-no. Perhaps a random sort of the books (instead of alphabetic) can be used for future Survivor Series polls?

 

But in the end, I'm can't imagine how hard it is to set these up and manage it round after round. So please don't my criticism too harshly, just bummed that some nice Action books got dumped so early, while some god-awful Wonder Woman books made it to round 2... sour grapes I guess

You may have a point there. I assumed that voters may have just been lazy and snapped away at the first ones that were shown. However, IMHO, many of those first 40 books weren't really that great. :shrug:

 

I could randomly insert these, but that would be harder for the voters to find the ones they want to vote off as well as harder for me to actually sort them out (round after round).

 

How about some feedback and opinions from others?

Well I didn't get a chance to look at round 1 and just now took a look at this

thread and wondered why there weren't any Adventure comics or just one

Action comic. The LOSH were my favorite stories and if they got booted out

in the first round by Dolphin or Secret Six then I would like to think that faced

with the task of booting off 30 choices out of nearly 200 that people just started

clicking from the very beginning.

 

Or maybe I'm the only one who liked the Legionaires.

I aree. I had to have 2 browers opened next to each other so I could look at the books in one while voting in the other. good thing I have a dual monitor setup at the office

Well, if this is possible, please tell me how I can do that.

 

I, personally, also don't have all the covers memorized. I just follow my own instructions in the first post of the thread. As I've put the name of the book in the details for each picture, when I hover the cursor over the pictures, the name of the book appears in that bar along the bottom of the screen. Then I scroll down and hit the appropriate check-box. Although 2 windows is a good idea as well, it's not necessary to memorize them.

DC for most of its silver age was not selling conflict. DC covers emphasize humor (adventure 294), adventure (lois lane 11) and comaraderie (Action 285).

 

It's not a surprise, on this site, that the one Action cover to make round 2 (#242) featured a fight between Brainiac and Superman and the one Hawkman to advance (#6) featured a fight between Hawkman and a winged gorilla.

 

To focus only on the fighting covers is to miss much of what made the silver age DC special.

Great contest! I was too busy to join in the nominations -- I haven't looked at Silver for a couple of weeks -- but you ended up with a fine selection.

I don't think there was really "alphabet discrimination." I went through the whole list thoroughly and voted off quite a few of the A covers because they were weak.

 

Surprising that Showcase 27 and 29 got no votes, since it's not clear that Sea Devils is a superhero (as opposed to adventure) series! It does have most of the trappings, so might as well include it.

 

Unfortunately the mouse-over feature doesn't work for me (Firefox 3.5.7 Mac) but opening two tabs in the browser isn't difficult.

Looks like reverse alphabet discrimination in this round! The big losers are W books.

 

Amazing how evenly the votes are distributed -- the highest scores are only 16 (2%) for

Not too many surprises so far, although I missed round 1 somehow so I don't know what was sent packing then.

 

Batman 200 is getting plenty of votes.
