I can see it causing problems, whether it's done lots of times or not. What if someone who's interested in a book gives up on a thread since they assume the book is gone, but in reality the poster decides they don't want it once they've seen the scans?

 

In reality it kind of staves off the competition to hit the little man when the scans come up.

No, I think this is a legit observation. And I think the buyer owes an obligation to publicly say if they pass on it. Bottom line is that I use this sparingly, and only when, as Andre points out, books are listed with prices but no scans.
