I think Brave and the Bold 28 is more important than Avengers 1. Avengers isn't the first SA super team of established heroes, JLA is. And if it weren't for the popularity of the JLA, Stan might not have thought of FF1 which started the whole Marvel SA.

In descending order:

FF1

AF15

Hulk 1

JIM 83

TOS39

Showcase 4

X-Men 1

BB28

Avengers 1

Showcase 22

For me, the Fantastic Four and start of the Marvel superhero line/universe is the most significant event of the SA.

P.S.: Honorable mention to Avengers 4.

I agree mostly with Bob's list. Here's how I'd order them.

FF1 The start of the hero machine in the Marvel Universe. Marvel didn't start the silver-age hero books, but they dominated the silver age nonetheless.

AF15 The intro of the most popular character, ever.... (Yes, I think Spidey's more popular than supes or Bats, so sue me.)

SC4 Started the silver-age hero movement. That's worth third place.

Hulk 1 Hulk is such an important character in marvel continuity.

JIM 83 Stan and Kirby made mythology cool with Thor.

BB28 Really the first Hero team. Underrated book, even now.

TOS39 1st Iron Man should be big I guess, but never was a big fan of the character, falls to seven on my list.

Showcase 22 1st GL, corner-stone of the DC Universe

X-men 1 Not the 1st team book, but unlike Avengers 1, multiple key 1st appearances, Magneto, Cyclops, Marvel-Girl, Beast, Professor X, Ice-Man.

AV4 1st Cap in the Silver-Age. Huge moment in marvel mythos. Still an underrated book.

Honorable mentions: DD1, AV1 and FF5

I agree. I would certainly put FF#1 at the top. Would there have been a sustainable Silver Age without Marvel?

Of course there would have...DC outsold Marvel until late in the SA. And the Marvel SA didn't even start until 5 years after it started for DC.

My personal top ten, which is obviously more DC oriented:

Showcase 4

Fantastic Four 1

Amazing Fantasy 15

Brave and the Bold 28

Showcase 22

Journery into Mystery 83

Hulk 1

Adventure 247

Showcase 6

Tales of Suspense 39

If Showcase 22 wasn't so hot right now, would it be on this list ? - I have to wonder....

Showcase 4

Brave and Bold 28

FF 1

X Men 1

AF 15

Hulk 1

TOS 39

Part of the reason it's hot is the burgeoning realization that it belongs on this list.

FF1

AF15

Show4

Hulk1

BB28

ASM1

XM1

Show22

JIM83

TOS39

This is the most balanced DC/Marvel list. The only choice I would quibble with would be ASM 1. Valuable book but not important compared to a first appearance of a major charactor. I would replace it with Avengers 4 or FF48.

I don't have the dates in front of me, but Adventure 247, the first Legion of Super-Heroes predates Brave and Bold 28, iirc, by well over a year, and was the first team group of the Silver Age.

Here is my top ten list. What will be seen as the best books in the hobby over the long run.

AF 15

FF 1

X-Men 1

Hulk 1

ASM 1

TOS 39

Showcase 22

Showcase 4

JIM 83

BB 28

A lot of people downgrade X-Men 1, saying it wasn't good until GSX 1 (which is debatable). X-Men 1 was first appearance of Cyclops, Prof X and Jean Grey (Phoenix), who were three huge parts in the storyline that made the new X-Men so popular.

Brave and Bold 28

FF 1

X Men 1

AF 15

Hulk 1

TOS 39

Pretty much the same thing can be said for TOS 39. Iron Man and GL are both hot these days because of very recent events. For Iron Man it's the killer movie, for GL it's the Geoff Johns run which I hear is fantastic, and an upcoming movie right? But in my mind, they're both still 2nd tier heroes.

Not that I'm knocking the 2nd tier! My main man Barry falls right in there. And Adam Strange might not even be 2nd tier unfortunately.

By the way, is there a generally accepted first SA comic for Marvel? For DC, and the SA in general, it's SC 4. Would the Marvel equivalent be FF 1?

Yes. I think FF#1 can be considered the beginning of the Marvel SA.
