SDCC Report from the other (Dealer) side!

101 posts in this topic

Hey everyone! I haven't done this in a long while, but this show seemed a worthy candidate.

I arrived in San Diego on Monday night and checked in to the Marriott, asked and received a bay view room (very cool).

Tuesday - Up early. Very early. Finally about 5:20 AM, I decide I am not going back to sleep and get up. Unpack and after a while, went down for a long walk along the bay (down to the pirate ship in front of the Holiday Inn). After a quick shower and breakfast, over to the con at about 8:30, where my books are ready and waiting to be unpacked at my booth. Setup day is always the longest day for the dealer. The room is hot (not as bad this year), and you are working pretty much all day long. Take a break for lunch about 2:00. Tyson Schneider and I went to 's Last Resort and had a big greasy cheeseburger and a few 32 ounce drinks. Back to the show until about 8:00. Finally done setting up. We go to Old Town and enjoy some great Mexican food.

Weds - Up early again. Must be the time change. At least I slept til about 5:30 today. Another hour long walk along the bay, shower, breakfast. Got to the show about 9 AM. Final setup stuff. Working new books into inventory. I also received about 125 CGC graded books at the convention (shipped to my hotel courtesy of Gemma (worship)), so I had to price all of those and sort them in. Weds is the day when the action really starts. That afternoon, my first sale of the weekend was to Tom Brulato, who bought 1 slab and a stack of raw books which I just got in. Tupenny rolls in about lunch time, so at least I have a little help. Also start seeing lots of other boardies around. The airport must really be rocking. Chuck is around filming a documentary on the remainder of the Mile High books, invites me to participate, but I was conveniently absent when he rolled through. Carbonaro is set up directly across from me and also is filming, but he is doing a reality show. Actually signed some kind of deal this weekend I understand. Bought a couple of books for want list guys from Ritter, and went and bought a few books from Ted (unfortunately had to return a nice JLA #100 because of color touch) Almost preview time now, start putting the wall books up and all of the dealers are pretty much doing the same. 5:00 crowd starts rolling in, and start selling books almost immediately. Very good preview night on the whole. About 9:15, Rocker and I go to Seaport Village and destroy a big pizza. Back to the room before 10:00 which is cool. He is asleep almost immediately.

Thursday - Up early, walk, shower, breakfast, over to the con. Wash, rinse, repeat. Probably my busiest day at the con, certainly my best sales day. Lots and lots of board members around. Always good to see the west coast half. David Robinson is lurking around the show, and I hear DeCaprio, but I haven't seen him. Dennis Miller walked by the booth, smiling and friendly. Dead tired by the time the show ends, but this is one of my favorite nights of the con. DC War dinner time at Fillippis. Fantastic food and company. I think there were 19 guys there including Billy Tucci who did the great Sgt Rock hardcover that came out last Christmas.

Friday - You know the drill, except this time, Tupenny joins me for the walk and breakfast, not for the shower though ( (tsk). This day is kind of a blur. We were really busy all day long. Bob Overstreet came by the booth and talked for a while. I have known Bob since I was a kid, and when he was a natural brunette. Enjoyed the talk. The Canadian Juggernaut (otherwise known as Greggy, (or the legend if you were in my booth this weekend. I SOLD BOOKS TO GREGGY! :acclaim:)) was at my booth alot, as was KOR and Louise (we ran Roy's sorry butt off, who needs him). Lou even brought some lunch around. Tupenny must have something really bad on Greggy, as he had him running errands all weekend. Either that or Mr Loey is just a genuinely nice guy. :o

I also got interviewed by WealthTV which is a completely 3D network based in California. The girl was fairly attractive, but not a very good interviewer. Somebody at the booth said I was a natural, but felt like a total dork. After the show, Me, Tupenny, Roy, Lou and Pablo (arzach44) went to Old Town and ate too much, then walked around. I bought a pink guitar for my little girl, and took the picture of Roy & Louise that was in his thread. I took another one but his gut was sticking out about a mile and I had to take another one with him sucking in. :gossip:. I can sympathize though (hence the walking every day), so I did it gladly.

Saturday - On a record pace so far, so I am really stoked. But this is the hardest day of the actual con. The room is filled with lunatics and costumes. (Old dealer proverb - Costumes don't have pockets). Lots of sales and nearly as many stupid questions. No colossals sales today, but big volume. Had lots of requests for ASM #129, which I didn't have. Also lots of pretty girls at the show (I am sure you have seen the pics by now), including Allie Jae who came over and spent a while catching up. She is a very interesting girl and she really has it together as well. After the show, Josh, his date (sorry forgot her name), Roy, Louise, Me and my date Tupenny go to the Panda Inn and have some very good Chinese food and some interesting conversation. Roy was in rare form tonight, and actually didn't look like a comic dealer for a change lol (well, unless the comic dealer was Chuck). Lots of stories, lots of BS, and we ended my part of the evening reading our fortunes (from the cookies) aloud to the table, followed by "in bed". Tupenny, Lou, and Roy went out for a few nightcaps. Rocker rolled in around 1:30.

Sunday - Last day of the con, and it has absolutely flown by. Tons of people. Tons. Had to be the busiest day on the show floor, and turned out to be my slowest day for sales, which is unusual. Lots of activity, several good byes. Allie Jae came back by to say bye, Josh N came over and talked for a while, as did Borrock. Before I knew it, it was time to start packing it up. Load out takes forever and finally about 9:30 we had everything on the truck. Big thanks to Greggy for staying and helping out. Me, Greggy, and Tupenny went for a very late supper (almost too late, we had to beg our way in) to Sammy's Woodfired Pizza. Kind of become our tradition at this point.

Overall a very successful show for me. Not record status as the show kind of tapered off for me on Saturday and Sunday, but still very good. Especially good in light of the economy, perceived comic market, etc.

Got to spend time with lots of boardies including Tupenny (truly a great friend), Greggy, KOR, Mr Bedrock, comick1, Keith Marlow(forget his board name), Roy and Lou, arzach44, Sardo, Bunky Brian, JMC, and tons of other guys who are far too numerous to name, and I am far too tired to remember right this moment. Thanks to everyone for stopping to say hello and especially for the business.

Here is a partial list of the books sold. This list does not include items which were not in my inventory such as the stuff I sold to Brulato, and some other similar items. It also doesn't include the 2 1/2 boxes of $3.00 bronze age stuff which we sold. There were also some of the newer slabs sold that I forgot to right down.

How about a report without the word Roy in it.

How about a thread without the poster Roy in it?

Plenty of those to go round.

Hey Dale, you had a number of early Supes at the show. Any of those higher grade?

None of the really early ones were high grade. A few in the 7.0 range when I first picked the collection up. But I had some issues between 50 - 100 in higher grade. Some are gone, some still here.
