Timely SuperHeroes Comic List

19 posts in this topic

I am mostly a Silver Age guy and just do a little bit of dabbling in Golden Age. I am debating whether I want to get more involved in acquiring the Timely superhero comics and was trying to put together a complete checklist of the all the Timely/Atlas superhero books. This is what I came up with:

All Select 1 - 11

All Winners 1 - 19, 21 (no 20)

All Winners Vol II, 1

Astonishing 3 - 6

Blonde Phantom 12 - 22

Captain America Comics 1 - 78

Daring Mystery Comics 1 - 12

Human Torch Comics 2 - 5, 5 - 38

Marvel Boy 1 - 2

Marvel Comics 1

Marvel Mystery Comics 2 - 92

Men's Adventures 27 - 28

Miss America Vol I, 1

Miss Fury 1 - 8

Mystic Comics 1 - 10

Mystic Comics Vol II, 1 - 4

Namora 1 - 3

Red Raven Comics 1

Submariner 1 - 42

Sungirl 1 - 3

Tough Kid Squad Comics 1

USA Comics 1 - 17

Young Allies 1 - 20

Young Men 24 - 28

I skipped the Cap America and Marvel Mystery 132 page giants as they were reprints.

Does Tough Kid Squad fit into the superheros? I basically in just judging it by a cover scan.

Is there anything that I missed? Any help is greatly appreciated.

and tho' i know no one who counts house ads as "appearances," there is a semi-appearance by cap in comedy 22, and millie as "the blonde phantom" in millie 2. neither technically "appearances," but both in my box nonetheless.

I count Millie the Model #2 as a Blonde Phantom proto-type.

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge with me. I could not find a complete list on the internet and had missed out a number of books. This board is a wealth of knowledge. :applause:

Billy - Wow what a collection :o I am in awe (worship) (worship) (worship)

By my count then there are 422 Timely SuperHero books not including reprints, ads, or pulps. I' ve been making good progress on my current project of getting all the Marvel Super Hero books 1961 - 1965 in CGC 8.0 or better (total 323 books) so I was looking at maybe starting a second project but this one might be a little too daunting for me to undertake. (I have no idea how DC completists do it)

I saw Joker Comics #1 was added in one reply but when looking at Billy's phenomenal set it was not included as a Timely super hero book. Is Joker Comics #1 a super hero book?

Excluding Joker #1 this is the list I have now:

Issues (422 books)

All Select 1 - 11

All Winners 1 - 19, 21 (no 20)

All Winners Vol II, 1

Amazing Comics 1

Amazing Mysteries 32

Astonishing 3 - 6

Black Stone the Magician 2 - 4

Blonde Phantom 12 - 22

Captain America Comics 1 - 78

Complete Comics 2

Comedy Comics 9 - 11

Daring Mystery Comics 1 - 12

Human Torch Comics 2 - 5, 5 - 38

Ideal 4

Kid Comics 1 - 10

Marvel Boy 1 - 2

Marvel Comics 1

Marvel Mystery Comics 2 - 92

Marvel Tales 97

Men's Adventures 27 - 28

Miss America Vol I, 1

Miss America Vol II, 2 - 5

Miss Fury 1 - 8

Mystic Comics 1 - 10

Mystic Comics Vol II, 1 - 4

Namora 1 - 3

Red Raven Comics 1

Submariner 1 - 42

Sungirl 1 - 3

Tough Kid Squad Comics 1

USA Comics 1 - 17

Venus 11 - 19

Witness 1

Young Allies 1 - 20

Young Men 24 - 28

Reprints (3 books)

Captain America 132 page Giant 1

Marvel Mystery 132 page Giant 1, 2

Ads/Protoypes (2 books)

Comedy 22 - One panel Cap America Comic

Millie the Model 2 - dressed as Blonde Phantom Prototype in a panel

Pulps (1 book)

Marvel Stories - Nov 1940 - One page Human Torch Comic (that is really an ad)

Did you mean to put Venus 11 - 19 on the list? It should be Venus 1 - 19

Joker Comics #1 has a Stuporman story, which came from Daring Mystery Comics. It is a satire on Superman, but he is a Superhero non-the-less!

I thought Venus 1 - 10 were not considered superhero books but 11 - 19 were as the series shifted from romance.

I do not believe story content would relate to whether or not a character is considered a Superhero or not. She has the same powers throughout the series. Shifting from romance stories to horror stories had no bearing on her abilities. I will say the horror books are way cooler!

that's how i was taught to collect it. but, completist that i am, i got all 19 of them anyway. i don't have a scan of 1-10, tho'.

i don't "officially" count comedy 11 or joker 1. but i do have a comedy 11, just cuz, and want a joker 1--not for s/h content, but to have all the "big ol' fat" timely #1's. plus, it'll apparently make west happy, and that's always a good thing. it's the only big #1 i'm missing.

and here's millie---she's the newest addition.
