I Officially Give Up

Okay, I was following a few variant auctions, and since a couple had issues I personally collect, I put in serious snipes on the ASM and MTU auctions. I contacted the lady, but as the auctions already had multiple bids, I respected the EBay open-auction system and didn't even contemplate an off-EBay deal.

Apparently someone else doesn't have the same moral fibre, and this "variant mania" is becoming very troublesome, as apparently some bozos will do anything and everything to hoard copies.

This isn't sour grapes, as I could have done the EXACT SAME THING, but since there was obvious bidder interest and a high hit count, it didn't come within my "moral standards" to tell someone to delete official EBay bids and sell to me instead.

I'm posting this hoping that this lady (who seemed extremely nice) gets some serious offers from board members on her remaining comics, and might make a few bucks out of any future deals, rather than getting scammed.

I know, and I just can't force myself to join the club. I have a rule whereby I can only make an offer for an auction with no bids, otherwise I'd be treading on others who put in bids on the items.

In this case, with multiple bids and hit counts in the 60+ range, I assumed I'd be in for a fight, but being a Byrne fan, I was prepared to go pretty high for the MTU's.

This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, from the POV of not getting to bid, those who arbitrarily got their bids deleted, and for the lady (who was extremely nice in emails) potentially getting rooked.

Even so, I'm not going to play the same cut-throat game, as completing my Byrne/ASM 35-centers is not worth digging around in the muck.

I think it's very good form, not to contact the seller "after" bids have been placed. I agree it's better not to be that cutthroat.

Not just that, but I assumed (from the bids and the high hit counts) that I was not the only one who'd found these, and I was more than prepared to go for it, win or lose.

To side-step the process AFTER bids had been entered and AFTER 60-80 people had viewed each of the auctions is pretty low.

If it had been a BIN that I missed, them's the breaks, and if it had just been listed, and immediately taken down due to an offer, same thing. But this is an entirely different animal.

P.S. It looks like a board member made the buy, as the original 1-Star Thread Rating attests. 893naughty-thumb.gif

Thanks guys, and I have come to the decision that there is only one solution to this cancerous problem; any new variant auction will get full disclosure of 35-cent variants to the seller.

I apologize any effect this will have on others searching ethically for hidden variants, but it seems there are a few "bad apples" that need to be squished.

I agree with you completely. In cases like these, I have written the seller and expressed my utter disappointment in being unable to bid and asked them to please not end auctions early in the future. Most times the seller lists the items again and lets the auctions run their course. This ususally leaves the original buyer fuming. 27_laughing.gif

Well, I'm hoping you have sent the seller a similar email in this case. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

Every time I think, "Ya know maybe I'm wrong, maybe this hobby doesn't have its roots and foundation in screwing over little old ladies at garage sales and making thousands after payin gthem pennies." Things like this come out of the woodwork and reaffirm that feeling.

It reminds me of one of the chances I got to take the high road. When I was a kid, er around 14 my dad would always go to garage sales looking for old parts and radios and things like that as he used to be a pack rat fixer upper and was always tinkering with something. So he comes back one day and brings me back some comics that were for sale at this one place. Now my dad knows nothing about comics except for me telling him over and over if he'd kept the stuff from his childhood he could have retired 10 years before he did. So I look over the books and most are late silver beat up readers, which I was happy to have cause I thought the stories and art were still cool. But there was an early Silver 'Tec in very nice shape that somehow made it through - not my cup of tea at the time, but I took it to a local dealer who of course proceeded to low ball me. To a 14 year old in the late eightees 100 bucks it still a 100 bucks even though Im sur ehe sold it for 200-300 or more.

So I got home asked my Dad where the Garage sale had been, he drove me there and I knocked on the door and presented the, surprise surprise, nice older lady $50 bucks.

Good for you JC!

I try not to tamper with auctions after bids have been placed unless the reserve (if there is one) hasn't been met yet.

5 stars for your thread!

Glad you are back... hi.gif

There should be a little icon for "gills flapping". Yeah. Little old lady. The fact that she's a POWER SELLER and the fact that ALL OF THEM have been relisted with the correct information in them appears to deflect away from your theory that she was being scammed.

She's going to make $4K from these auctions. Scam my [!@#%^&^].

Ummm, do you want to read the email from her, thanking me for my help, detailing how she refused the lowball offer, and asking if the new listings are correct?
