A couple higher graded copies of this awesome book coming up in HA's August auction.  Including an 8.5 from the other guys.  Any estimates on where that book might end up?

25% below last gpa sale.

Apologies in advance if this is answered elsewhere - I searched the forums and didn't find it.  Outside of EBay, what sites would you recommend I monitor/track for a nice (6.0 - 8.0 range) #1?  I'm returning to collecting after about 25 years... pre-online auctions, pre-mainstream Internet access for research, ... well, pre-everything used today I'd imagine.  :)  Anyway, the last week or so, I've been researching this and it seems that most of the mainstream auction sites seem to favor the seller more than the buyer, so are there any sites you'd recommend I check and monitor?

Related to that - I'm going to my first Con in August (Boston Comic Con) and I'm planning to have Stan Lee autograph this particular book if I can find it at an acceptable price by then.  What are everyone's thoughts on attempting to obtain it prior to the Con vice looking for one at the Con?  I'm sure each Con if different as the inventory changes, but is it rare to find it at the Cons or fairly common?  Also, thoughts on price for the book at a Con vice online (cheaper? Same?) - I realize it will depend on a lot of factors, but as a general rule I'd think it would be cheaper at the Cons.

Hi there!

The Boston Con is a good one, but the odds of finding the kind of Sgt. Fury #1 you're looking for will be pretty low.  I'd say look hard now, especially here at the Golden/Silver/Bronze Age selling forum and at the big guns' websites (see the "Silver Age Dealer" thread for links to folks like Metropolis, Highgradecomics.com, Greg Reece, Mr. Bedrock, Comiclink, Superworld Comics, Worldwide Comics, Harley Yee Comics, etc.).

Ebay might have copies as well, but buying there can sometimes feel risky.  (Also, just FYI, a Con price would not be cheaper than a website's price...good dealers will quote the same price as their website, but some dealers will jack up the prices on books at a Con.)

All this reminded me that I never posted my copy here, acquired on the boards a few years back:

Good luck!

Dan

Dan,

Thanks for the information.  My research efforts have been all over the place the last week or so and I really need to start narrowing my focus so I appreciate any sites provided that helps me narrow that focus.  I'll check out the sites you recommended.  Thanks also for the insight on the Con pricing.  Nice copy you have there BTW.

Thanks again,

Todd

Just to clarify your comment about EBay.  I agree that generally speaking you have to be cautious with EBay purchases, but I would think that any of the CGC or CBCS certified comics would not be a risk (as long as they arrive with the seal untampered).  Would you agree with that assumption?  Also, do you believe the current pricing at the auctions (like Heritage Auctions) is close to the current true value?  I ask because it seems like some of them seem to be much higher than I'd expect - are they inflated or just reflective of their true value?

Thanks,

Todd

Yes, I just meant that you should only buy a graded copy from a seller with a great reputation and feedback.

Prices on Ebay are often of the "stratospheric Buy It Now" variety, meaning you'll pay full freight and more for any reasonable key like Sgt. Fury #1, at least compared to GPA pricing. A legitimate Ebay auction, however, might end at a price more in line with the current market value.

And great-looking keys at a Comiclink or Comicconnect auction often go for a fair bit more than GPA.  The key is patience and a willingness to spend a little more for the right copy when it comes your way.

Thanks Dan.  I appreciate the information.  As a follow up I have another question, which I asked earlier today on the Silver Age War Comics thread, but thought the SGT Fury crowd might see it here first.  What in your opinion is the true market value for SGT Fury #1 in a 7.5, 8.0, and 8.5 grades, respectively?  I understand that market value is whatever people are willing to pay, but that doesn't always reflect true value.  Do you think it's on par with the current price guide?  I guess I'm trying to establish a goal price point for each of the listed grades - a price point that's fair for both the buyer and seller - because I just don't have a good feel for that yet.  I'm sure if I'm willing to wait a number of months (to your point about being patient :)) then I could find a pretty decent deal, but I'm really hoping to find something before Boston Comic Con because I'd like to get Stan Lee to sign it.
