Round 4 is upon us. The Boardies will vote, narrowing things down a bit in these preliminary rounds. Eventually we will have a favorite SA/BA Neal Adams vintage cover champion! :acclaim:

This round showcases the first 36 Adams covers from 1969 in chronological order. Some good stuff here, but not yet consistently wicked awesome. First chance for the Marvel Zombies to get involved in the fun!

Pick what you love, not what you think is popular.

Don't be shy with your comments. Let's hear why you made your choices. Influencing others with commentary is encouraged. :gossip:

The polls are still open in these previous preliminary rounds. Please visit them and vote if you have not:

Round 3 (1968 Concluded)

Round 2 (1968 Continued)

Round 1 (1967-1968)

Choose your 6 favorites this round.

My choices...

- Strange Adventures 216

- House of Mystery 178, 179, 180 (particularly 179) (more inventive camera angles / designs than many of the mainstream super-hero covers)

- Showcase 80 (1st in one of my favourite runs of Adams covers, Phantom Stranger)

- Superboy 153 (was either this or Action 374, the slightly Twilight Zone feel of the chosen cover won out)

It's kind of funny to see how much better the Tomahawk #121 cover looks than the B&B #84 even though they are pretty similar poses. Who did the inking on the books? That might be the difference - the Tomahawk looks more like the top Adams stuff while the B&B looks like it was done in 15 minutes.

I thought maybe Joe Kubert had inked the B&B cover, giving it a scratchier look but, according to GCD, both covers are Adams pencils and inks. (shrug)

While looking on GCD, I noticed Brave and the Bold 83 is missing.

B&B #83 is NOT an Adams cover. he did the interior story. :gossip:

I totally agree. The Sgt. Rock cover does look very Kubertish to me, and rushed as well.

Although it has absolutely no bearing on this voting, I'm just going to voice my opinion that I happen to like the rejected version of X-Men #56 than the published version, I like the reject version's image composition and really love the characters being strung up across the masthead/title, to me it's just a better image....

+1

I like that alternate cover also, and think it would have been a great replacement for the actual published cover. I read that management refused this cover because they thought the X-Men logo was too obscured by the figures on the letters. That's what makes it unique though! Would have been a classic.
