Looking at published dates printed on the books, it is very hard to tell. DC Special 4 has September. HoS 81 has September. The CGC label has Aug-Sept. 

From "Mike's Amazing World of Comis" we have a release date:

Now, in looking at cover dates, the HoS series in the 79. 80, 81 era are a bit confusing.

Not that that site is always correct but I believe it lists “on sale” as May 69 for the DC Special and June 69 for the HOS 81.

If that’s the case, then DC Special is Abel’s first appearance.

DC Special #4 definitely came out first. The “other” guys note it correctly of their slabs so if CGC has HOS #81 as it then correction is needed.

Did you know that Cain was based on the late Len Wein and Abel was based on Joe Orlando’s late assistant Mark Hanerfeld who wrote that first story with the character based on him in DC Special #4. Joe loved doing things based on real people at times.

I believe there was an article about this in one of the issues of Elvira’s HOM including some pics IIRC.

Always liked the hosts and I love my bookends too! :smile:

Abel is introduced and tells a story in Dc special 4, I’ve always thought it was open and shut as his first. He probably even has more panels in Dc special 4 than hos81, but I’m in a car and can’t count right now :)

Thanks for letting me know this because I don’t have a raw copy and haven’t gotten around to finding one to read. Agree that DC Special is Abel’s first appearance.

Thanks Jayman, Wrightson and Adams get most of the accolades on these, but I feel Cardy holds his own as well.

Maybe I’m mistaken but I’m not sure Wrightson or Adams did any covers for Ghosts. If I’m wrong, I’m sure I’ll get corrected shortly! :shy:
