What's tough to get out there in Moderns? ...anything?

64 posts in this topic

Wondering if moderns are getting tough to find relative to Silver and/or Bronze Age primarily due to the lower print runs of the late 90's to early 2000. Specifically in DC's, DC Vertigo, and Marvel. Also wondering .... is anyone looking for this stuff?

Hoping some people have a feel for what's going on? Any chance these moderns with their impossibly low print runs are being overlooked as future collectables?

JC.......please be gentle. grin.gif

Yea....back then it never occured to me to get more than one of the same comic. Plus I didn't know it's significance back then....wasn't it the first direct only comicbook?

Bummer that you only got one copy of that ultra-tough gem. Now, if you had 188 copies in NM, THAT would be something.

Anything to do with you asking for ALL Byrne moderns in that collection I was looking at? grin.gif

I'll pull any for you the second time I go through the books. Promise. But I really need a list, 'cause I won't know what I'm looking for.

Are vertigos still quite easy to find?

You laugh now, but after years of having duplicates of Dazzler #1 for sale, I sold 2 copies as part of my sale this week!! I guess people are catching up on the infamous "It's October, 2013, what's happening" thread:

By Bug A. Boo, AP Entertainment Writer

October 13, 2013

TOKYO, JAPAN (AP) -- A world-record was set today at Ichiban's Fifth Annual Worldwide Collectibles Signature Auction when the only copy of Dazzler #1 deemed to be a perfect "10.1" by Collectibles Grading Group (CGG) hammered down at $2.3 million dollars. "I knew this book was special when I procured it from long-time dealer and part-time gypsy Chuck Ratzinski for $1.35 during the Great Comic Book Crash of '04" comic investment specialist Joe Comvestor said.

Formed in 2003, CGG was a fledgling independent collectibles grading company until they hired Comvestor as a consultant on a full-time basis. "I knew the evolution of graded collectibles, and I knew that what CGG needed was something to make them unique - the 10.1 grade. With no competition above the 10.0 level, the specs flocked to us like moths to a flame, just like I knew they would. Have I mentioned that I'm always right?"

Comvestor said that once he had the book, he felt it was only a matter of time before his investment paid off. "After the blockbuster hits Daredevil, Hulk, and Punisher, it was inevitable that Marvel Comics would turn their flagship character into a succesful movie franchise, and as usual, I was right." The scantily clad, roller-skating Dazzler has been a big-screen phenom since her initial on-screen cameo in Nova, the Rocket-Man, the Marvel Comics blockbuster film released in 2005.

Other notable sales at the highly-anticipated Worldwide Collectibles auction included an early pencil-and-marker Thor sketch by Vintage Comic Book Dealer Dar Diesel that sold for $540,000, and a pair of extremely short-shorts worn by legendary collector Gre Ggy at fourteen consecutive San Diego Comic Cons, which closed at over $200,000. "I knew if I washed them they would no longer be NM", Ggy said "So I kept them in Mylar between shows to ensure they remained fresh. Well, as fresh as can be expected anyway ."

"This auction has definitely raised the bar for us," head auctioneer Daniel Keys noted, and said the company plans to unveil some real unique collectibles next year. "We have already lined up some quality material, including the only known 10.1(Slight A) copy of the RIP version of Batman 708, and over 12,000 copies of Hulk 181 in pristine gem-mint condition. However, we're considering running these as private auctions next year to dissuade, you know, the thrill bidders that auctions of this caliber have always attracted."

You know, forum members keep throwing out bug's name every time there is a shrill shill . But, the original bugaboo most certainly rounded out his water cooler flame wars with some highly entertaining posts in the comic forum.

So is he still around and feeling bitter....or are there just a bunch of want-a-bees trying to mimic him?
