Northland Pedigree original sales list

33 posts in this topic

The first listings from Motor City Comics of the Northland collection appeared in their Fall 1996, Spring 1997, and Spring 1998 catalogs. Unfortunately, these catalogs list only a very small number of early Marvels from this Pedigree collection. Hopefull, in compiling his book on Pedigrees Matt Nelson was able to obtain a complete listing of the collection from Michael Goldman. It seems that most of these books never made it to catalog (et tu, Capitain?). Perhaps some of you can shed additional light on early Marvels from this collection that you may have seen or owned.

Here goes:

Hi Namisgr

So that's an F.F. #12 (Pacific Coast) & an F.F. #13 (Northland) you picked up back in the day. You're obviously someone who's always had a grasp of which books were the tougher ones in the run. 893applaud-thumb.gif

(Beautiful copy btw !)

I just bought the Northland copy of TOS #63 from Motor City and it is a CGC VF/NM not a NM-. Also, the Northland Copy of TOS #40 did in fact grade at CGC VF+.

Hope this helps,

Eric

Unfortunately, I didn't attend the convention in Cgicagi in 1996 when the Northlands were first introduced by Motor City. In effect, I missed on some issues I would have gobbled up instantly, but more than made up for it at the Big Apple show later that year.

At one point, I owned more Northlands than anyone else & more than any other pedigree. I started by buying some TOS's, TTA, Thors, a few Journeys, a handful of Avengers and a bunch of DDs, all at the initial show and a few more later on.

The ASMs & X-Men were not let out to the public until a year or so after that.

Here are some Northland grades on books I once owned and some on books I still do:

IH 1 9.2; IH 2 9.4; IH 3 9.4

FF 8 9.4; 17 9.4; 23 9.6; 29 9.6; 36 9.6; 40 9.6; 48 9.6 & 50 9.6

ASM 2 9.0; 6 9.4; 7 9.4; 9 9.4; 10 9.6; 12 9.4; 13 9.6; 14 9.6; 15 9.4; 19 9.4; 25 9.6; 41 9.6; 51 9.6

TOS 42 9.6; 44 9.4; 45 9.0; 47 9.4; 48 9.4; 49 9.4; 55 9.6; 62 9.4; 65 9.6; 67 9.4

DD 3 9.4; 4 9.4; 5 9.4; 6 9.4; 8 9.4; 9 9.4; 16 9.8; 17 9.6; 19 9.6

Avengers 1 9.2; 4 9.2; 6 9.4; 7 9.4; 12 9.6

X-Men 6 9.6; 23 9.8; 28 9.6

Strange Tales 101 9.2; 110 9.4

JIM 100 9.6; 110 9.4; 116 9.8; 118 9.4; 119 9.4; 124 9.6

There's a bunch more, but I can't remember right now. It will come to me eventually. Overall, Northlands are awesome books, and because of the full runs on each title, it might be considered as the 3rd greatest SA pedigree behind Pacific Coast & Curator (you will hear no argument from me).

Thanks for the info, Cap. Mostly, I've seen only scans of Northland books (owning less than a dozen myself), but they certainly look fantastic. Among those that I own, the older ones are actually of higher quality than the late '60s Marvels, which tend to suffer from some light cover yellowing and lesser page quality.

I came across the Fall, 1998 Motor City catalog, with a handful more Northland Marvels listed. From the sound of your last post, most of the highest grade books were already cherry-picked at various shows prior to this and the previous catalogs:

Amazing Spiderman

41 VF/NM 150

42 VF/NM 130

43 VF+ 100

44 VF/NM 100

45 VF/NM 100

46 VF/NM 100

47 NM- 150

49 NM 220

50 VF 250

Ann 3 VF/NM 160

Ann 4 VF/NM 125

Tales To Astonish

54 VF/NM 150

60 F/VF 70

66 VF/NM 120

69 VF/NM 60

79 VF/NM 45

91 VF/NM 45

94 VF/NM 45

101 NM- 90

Hi, R100,

Its hard to think of myself as someone with a good grasp of the hobby. I had an early chance to buy from the first PCEI listings of the Original Owner/Pacific Coast pedigree, at a time when none of the books had been sold and the prices were not out of this stratosphere. Unfortunately, I was too timid and cheap to purchase more than about a dozen of them from the initial listings, and by the time I went back to PCEI for more, the books were all spoken for. C'est la vie!

I own the Tales to Astonish #90 from this collection. It's a CGC 9.4.

Some graded Northland DCs that I have seen:

Aquaman 18 CGC 9.4 C-OW

Hawkman 2 CGC 9.4 W

Mystery in Space 75 CGC 9.4 (Q)

Flash 160 CGC 8.0 C-OW

Flash 162 CGC 9.0 OW

OAW 211 CGC 9.0 C-OW

I've also seen the following GK Northlands:

Tarzan Lord of the Jungle 1 CGC 9.8 OW-W

Land of the Giants 1 CGC 9.4 OW

Anyone else have any grades for Northland DCs or other non-Marvels?

I haven't gotten any of them graded, but I am thrilled with all the Northland DC's I have, which

include 3 80 Page Giant Jimmy Olsen's (I am confident two would be 9.6, one 9.4), Justice

League 39 (not as nice as the Jimmys, probably 9.0-9.2), and an assortment of a dozen

12-cent Adventures that I got from Ed Jaster cheap (I guess not that many high grade Legion

fans) which are all outstanding 9.4-9.6 examples. They all have nice page quality. If only

I had gotten a shot at the more mainstream DC giants cloud9.gif

Legion appearances are woefully undervalued. There are a few of us looking for high grade copies, but not many. A couple of years ago there'd be a 9.4 or 9.6 copy on eBay or Heritage every few months or so, but they really seem to have dried up in the past year. Perhaps the prices just didn't incentivize sellers to sell. Which issues do you have, and are you interested in selling any? 893crossfingers-thumb.gifThis is the first I'd heard of Northland Adventures.
