Green Lantern #9. Should i buy it?

30 posts in this topic

Agreed, I'd pass. Golden Age Green Lantern issues tend to go for about 2/3 of guide, even in higher grades. And even the early books have fallen in recent years due to the character's irrelevance in the current Hal Jordan SA GL world.

I know--I've bought a few mid-grade slabbed issues of his early All-American appearances (19, 21, 22) for 30-40% less than what they sold for just a few years ago.

How strongly do I feel about this? It's my 1,000th post.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the consensus is to pass. I'll wait for something else better to come my way.

To see realized prices you need to join Heritage but it costs nothing.

Wow, they've sold the Church/Mile High copy 4 times in the past 4 1/2 years, and each resale has been for a substantial discount to the previous price (-50%, -25%, -25%)

And that doesn't take into account seller's fees and buyer premiums. hm

There are four things that stand out in this auction history (besides the obvious influence of a severe recession on the economy):

1) The long established 3:1 (plus) ratio enjoyed by the Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree is no longer a guarantee of even 2:1 OG value...

2) The desirability of high-dollar pedigree copies has diminished, especially for non-key GA comics...

3) If one collects DC second-string hero books for investment be prepared to hold onto them awhile or risk taking a loss...

4) There may be a saturation point for pedigrees.

Of course everyone's mileage varies and my observations are neither scientific nor reflective of the quality of the material, but in the general ebb and flow of collecting it would appear that currently there is very little growth potential in non-key prior incarnation hero books. (shrug)

You drew more conclusions than I would and, while they may be correct, you can see this type of price reduction occur even for popular issues when a particular copy is re-sold in rapid succession.

The "investors" it seems have taken a haircut. I'm sure though that the comic will eventually at some price find a good "semi-permanent" home with someone who loves it for its own sake.

;)

In the meantime, has anyone else noticed that the later issues of Green Lantern are less often seen or offered for sale than the earlier ones?

???

I've noticed that also. The only green laterns I've seen (outside of a convention) were #1 and 2 others that were below issue ten. This #9 being one of them, I can't remember the other. (I wanna say maybe issue 3 or 4)
