A Grading Question

30 posts in this topic

Let's suppose one has a nice (let's say VF 8.0 looking) copy of a SA Marvel Key.

Let's further suppose that this otherwise VF book has a 2 inch chunk missing from the Margin only of an interior non - story page.

How far would/should the CGC graders (or anyone for that matter) reduce the grade??

Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated... :foryou:

Was it you that had the O-O FF 2 that had the medium chunk out of the cover?

Yup, an otherwise 8.0-8.5 reduced to a 6.5...

One of the handful of original purchases not made at SID's Luncheonette. Bought it about 3 blocks east towards East Orange at a small Candy Store aross the street from Orange Park.

He used to "hang" the books on a taut wire stretched across the back wall behind the Candy Counter. They were securely attached to the wire by a saw-toothed clamp. :o He didn't bother to open the clamp, just pulled the books down. I think I've spotted 2 or 3 other examples in my meanderings through the collection.

I'm guessing that SID's had gotten the delivery the same day, but hadn't gotten around to cutting the wires and spreading the books across the shelves, so being 13 and impatient I headed down the Avenue... :(

I'm guessing the grade deduction from CGC was between 1.5 to 2.0 for that dime-sized chunk on the ULC.

Good memory, ACES...

Speaking of good memories, what a great story! Thanks for sharing.

As far as the grade drop, i would expect a 1 point deduction but hope i only got .5 . Tough to call.

I've seen examples where it didn't hurt the grade at all and its noted on the label. I've seen a "2 inch tear on interior page" old label. The book was ina 9.0 or so. Idk if they changed their policy though.
I bet it was just factored in the grade. Either way, it wont be noted on the label anymore.

Thanks for your thoughts...after I get some more feedback I'll show the book and label...Hint; this issue was selling BIG 6 months or so ago and might continue due to a certain upcoming movie... :gossip:

No, I believe that book was bought from Bob Storms as a 7.Something and pressed up by Matt Nelson and sold.

I haven't too much info on the books once they left my hands, but I have seen a few with different slabs and higher grades... :(

But hey, I got very nice prices for most of them, so can't complain too much.

Hey, maybe that's why I got such good prices...

Gee, I guess I was just doing my part in stimulating the economy. If you think about it, seems like a good model to help the OO, the middleman, the repairman, the 2d owner, and perhaps another middleman. Yup, Congress could use this...

Hi Harry. It's good to see you posting again. :hi:

Hi Dice!!!

Good to be back an "gettin into it again"...

I like your new sigline much better than the last one. She wouldn't be my choice to play WW, but some of these pics are starting to win me over... (thumbs u

I am curious about my OP though, any thoughts??

I'm surprised that foks think that would only be a 1 point drop or so.

If I were sitting at home grading some junk and I had an 8.0 with a dime-sized chunk out of one of the pages, I would probably go 5.5 or so. To me, it's not relevant if it affects the story or not.

Again, not speaking for CGC or anytone else. Just me.

I have no experience with such a defect so any answer I gave would be unreliable.

Unfortunately, the only way to get the answer is by submitting the book.

You may well be right...I'm gonna wait for a while more to try and garner a few more opinions.

Your drop of 5 grades for a chunk out of an non-story interior page margin, will probably set the bar for the severest reduction, but who knows...Personally, I would have thought that the locatio of the missing piece would have a great affect on the severity of the deduction.

And you don't really consider VF books to be "Junk" do you?? :kidaround:
