Wally Wood Artist's Edition Going back to print

60 posts in this topic

Got my copy and it is incredible. It's massive, the repro quality of the artwork is top notch and the binding is a beauty to behold.

Very worthwhile purchase for the Wally Wood fan and highly recommended.

On Sunday two comic book friends came over for dinner and a little show and tell. We looked through new books, talked about movies and tv, looked at original art, but the thing that was focused on for the longest time, page by page, was the Wally Wood Artist's Edition. In case any of you still haven't decided, the book is absolutely beautiful. I you are a Wally Wood art fan, this book is a must. When you go through it slowly, page by page, you feel like you are looking at original art. You also are stunned by the talent bursting through on each page. It is the best book to feature comic book art ever printed. Thank you Scott.

To be honest, despite all the glowing reports, I am still on the fence about this book. I am not familiar at all with Wally Wood's work and wonder, from a purely artistic point of view, if a non-fan of Wood's work would still enjoy the book?

Thoughts?

Wally Wood's 1950s EC artwork (esp. his Weird Science-Fantasy) would knock the socks off of any mortal. Great sci-fi backgrounds, bodacious babes, and phallic symbols (pistols, rockets). Arguably second only to EC's Frazetta/Williamson OA work. :cloud9:

If you are not familiar with Wally Wood's artwork, then need to go to comicartfans.com and search for Wally Wood to see some examples of his legendary artwork, both pencils and inking.

I consider Wally Wood as one of the greatest comic book artists of all time. Since he died in 1981, most youngsters don't know who he is. He never created any great characters like Ditko, Kane, Kirby, or Siegel and Shuster. Wood did create the red costume for Daredevil and the THUNDER agents. He was a very productive artist.

His EC science fiction were the best and set the standard by which other science fiction comics are compared. The size of the book matches the size of original EC artwork.

Forgot to mention the strength of EC OA is not only in its superior artist/inkers but their uniformly excellent writing with twist endings. Wally Wood begat Dave Stevens, Rand Holmes (underground comix), and perhaps Adam Hughes GGA! :whee:

If you're on the fence about buying this book, I can't recommend it any higher.

Very few things that come out have completely blown me away, but this book did it. It is nothing less than incredible.

If you are a fan of comic art and pre-code ECs, this book will completely eliminate your need for Viagra.

In case you misunderstood the message in my rambling...THIS BOOK IS INSANE! ^^

I'm also picking Wood as my favorite artist...ever. Even among the giants that were the EC artist he stood out as the very best. His composition, storytelling abilities and great eye for detail are incredible.

I also believe he's never been more popular. I put a Wally Wood EC page up for sale this weekend on my CAF and it sold in two days...

I think you need to see the book in person. I was on the fence due to the size until I saw it in person. Blown away. Got a Wonder Con copy coming my way right now.

I agree with Dice, Crome and the rest...Wally Wood is one of the greatest artists of the Golden Age. Stan Lee also chose him to do Daredevil for the first few issues...and he draws women beautifully.

I wouldn't think twice about this book.

It's about 3 feet tall, the quality is gorgeous and the artwork is some of the best ever published in a comic book.

We spent the other night flipping through it and admiring it. Even non comic people think it's impressive.

No brainer.

Just wear a bib so you don't drool on the book.

I've just ordered the second print from my LCS.

Not something I would have liked to carry home from the London Con.

I got my Wonder-Con variant yesterday -- stunning. Interesting that the indicia states it is a first printing of WW AE, nothing about WC exclusive or anything.

Was kind of surprised. Maybe IDW got them at the same time as the regular first edition but held them back for WC?

I'm sure they did get them printed at the same time as the regular edition.

Yes, they are the same printing, just different covers.

Best,

After months of waiting, I finally received my copy of the Woody book.

In a way, I'm glad I missed out on the first printing, as this edition has (to my mind) one of Woody's best-ever images to front the book, WS # 20.

All the Woody EC original art I once possed (three complete WF stories and one WS cover) are long-gone from my collection, so this book is a very fine replacement to own - and I can re-live (thanks to the marvelous quality of reproduction) how the artist's work looked 'in the flesh' (if you see what I mean?).

Well done, Scott. (thumbs u

Hope you do some more EC-orientated books. Graham Ingels would be terrific :wishluck:
