What you collect sucks: featuring The Walking Dead #1

190 posts in this topic

I know nothing about this book. Literally nothing. Except I just saw that a CGC 8.0 sold for $400+, which seems insane to me.

Am I ignorant? Is the buyer retarded? Am I retarded?

Less them 8000 copies but millions of fans for Walking Dead #1 . A better bet than ASM 129 now.

Think about it . The last three Punisher movies bombed, while Walking Dead dominates graphic novels on Amazon.com and breaks cable tv ratings. With the videogame on the way to Xbox. The skys the limit! I see this CGC 9.8 as a $3000 book soon.

It kinda reminds me of old timers saying hip-hop is fad,but here we are 25 years later and hip-hop is a billion dollar industry.

Money =Respect. ;)

It's a bubble unless they drastically improve the writing for the show's third season.

I was mostly okay with the first season (who doesn't love zombies?) and could ignore a lot of the problems.

But this season has been cringe worthy for a number of reasons. There's enough concern out there to know something isn't right with the series.

If that happens, it's only because the same people who are buying cgc 9.8s for 2K now will get excited and start trying to hoard the book. It's the same irrational nonsense over and over with this speculator-driven market.

No one who isn't already an insane slab collector is going to watch the latest episode of the show, or play the game, and think it's so good that they need to go spend 3K for an entombed copy of this comic. Best case scenario, the game and tv show affect TPB sales because people actually want to read the darn things.

On the contrary. Season 2 blows season 1 away. As much as I liked season 1, this season has made it look like it was written by kids. (worship)

The Walking Dead #1 was going for big bucks before the tv show, and if you actually read it you will find out it`s so much more than zombie fare. :baiting:

Walking Dead is the best thing to happen to comic books this decade. It gave a dying industry a shot in the arm. Let`s face it there are so many times you can talk about what the bronze age and copper keys are. :)

I'm impressed with how issue #2 is doing, before too long this will be a $1500 book...

Agreed. The story is very far removed from most gore fest zombie movies in that the central focal point has little to do with zombies other than the fact that they used as a foil. The show is about survivor's humanity and how they deal with it crisis.

I think its really well written and does better when there is less gore than more.

Brought new life with new fans. Look at how the modern comic book back issue market has exploded these last 6 months on Ebay. Walking Dead was the catalyst to getting people interested in not only reading new comic books, but speculating as well. Even look on Amazon.com graphic novels best seller list, and you will find Walking Dead dominates the charts. Spider-man is not even in the top twenty on Amazon. It`s Walking Dead fighting it out with Naruto. The Walking Dead is good for the comic industry. (thumbs u

I was 'hoarding' them last year and they were $300 a pop, raw. When i say hoarding, i had 2 copies. lol

Sold 'em to a boardie at cost and he graded 'em out 9.6 & 9.8.

The 9.8 went for about $500. I thought that was nuts. They're approaching $1500 now.

That's what you get for trying to deal in non-VintageComics.

Young buck, to you a Walking Dead #1 is vintage.

Monica.

No doubt, but being good for the industry and saving it are 2 different claims in my book. How do you think it saved the industry? you said it gave a dying industry a shot in the arm.

From what I remember, Kirkman has also used his fame at being a big advocate for creator owned rights because he believes it puts the responsibility on writers and artists to continue to produce quality material, thereby keeping standards higher than just hiring journeyman to produce fodder and drek for a salary. Or something along those lines.

Ah, now I understand why an 8.0 would sell for $400.

LCS sell Walking Dead trades constantly. I would suspect it is a LCS' most

reliable comic related seller.

Let's recap:

An 8.0 is worth $400 because:

- The creator is an advocate for something that only artists care about

- This book saved the industry by encouraging speculation

- The millions of people watching the show want a slabbed copy of #1

- This book is about more than zombies

- I'm a person_having_a_hard_time_understanding_my_point

Wasn't I answering a question as to why Kirkman is perceived as saving (or helping save) the industry?

From my own limited, personal experience, I agree with this. I absolutely loved Captain America, the Iron Man movies and I kind of liked the second hulk movie. I felt absolutely zero desire to go and lay out thousands of dollars on IM, CA or Hulk keys. I'm just not a big fan of the books and if I want to read the stories I'm going to pick up the marvel masterworks or an omnibus.

Maybe movies/tv/games whatever have a measurable impact on the value of the books beyond the collectors but to me it kind of reminds me of spammers trying to pump up penny stocks.

Now, on the other hand, if Neal Adams or Bernie Wrightson were to star in a porn movie with Kate Hudson, that might influence me to pay double or triple GPA for their work. Wait those guys are all old, that'd be kind of disgusting. Let me rephrase that, if Kate Hudson was in a porn movie reading a neal adams HoM book that would totally get me to empty my wallet for those books.
