How much do you care about eBay user names?

27 posts in this topic

So, all my listings in the eBay store say that I don't ship internationally, which they will until I work all the bugs out of how much to charge. But I get requests from international customers, which is fine, and I work out charges for them...

Today I get this email, asking if I can ship a set of Preacher and/or Sandman to the UK...

Dear tpbking,

would you consider selling a full set of preacher or sandman tpb's to a uk bidder with a good history and a winning smile as i am a massive fan of both and think its about time i owned my own. please say yes. Robert Simm

To view the item, go to: <http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2245807566>http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2245807566

....

So I figure what the heck, I will take a look at his feedback and then give him a quote for the shipping. I scroll down to the bottom of the email and find:

Thank you,

Even though he only has feedback of 14, I will probably ship to him anyway... but I admit I would feel better if his id was "vertigofan" or "ukcomicguy" or "rsimm" or even "angrymonkey"... confused-smiley-013.gif

English humor ? confused-smiley-013.gif

No! sumo.gif

No, you don't find sweaty boobs funny? or no, this isn't English humor?

Ah, it's not unfunny, but it's not exactly inspired, either, or typically English. Actually it probably is.

English "funny" ebay names tend to be more obvious, such as "Baldrick" or "ponce" or "eebygum" or "I_hate_ManU or whatever. Not clever either, particularly, but definitely English.

I would be less likely to accomodate someone with a marginally offensive ID or internet handle. For the record, I am a pretty much unoffendable person. I think it says a lot about a person's personality, character and maturity. Having a little bit of an internet alter ego is totally cool, but it's sad that someone equates themselves to something really strange like that. Why would someone choose to represent themselves in that manner?

At least "angrymonkey" could have been derived from a high school nickname or something.

EDIT - Bear in mind that this post comes from a guy who just made an off-color joke in a grading thread!

In dealing with hundreds of different buyers on Ebay I have certainly come across many odd and immature usernames, especially when you consider that I have sold many adult comics in the mature items listings. I have also worried that a guy with a name like "muffdiver69" or "Evil666killer" would end up being a flake but I have been surprised to say that I can by no means determine how a person's buying habits would reflect in their name. In other words, I do not worry about the Ebay username at all. As long as the feedback is cool, then big deal. Stupid name does not equal stupid buyer. -------Sid

Hey, as long as he pays the money for the books and shipping, his ID could be "yourlefttesticle" for all I care.

But speaking of odd user names, I had a recent bad experience on ebay with a user who had an odd one. I hardly ever check the user name, and there was a batch of Batman TPBs for really cheap, and I bid and won. Only when I got the invoice did I see that the seller's ID was "nakedpornstar". I kid you not.

Long story short, I never got them, the seller never responded to my e-mails, and I had to file a complaint through PayPal. He was very quick to return my e-mail and refund my money once I filed that complaint.

Maybe I got lucky. With someone who wanted to be "nakedpornstar" (as opposed to "clothedpornstar" or "halfnakedpornstar"?), who knows where those things have been? Blecch! smile.gif
