That is an ugly 9.4. I think they inserted a 4 where a 0 should be. 9.0 looks about right.

Maybe it looks better in hand and scans arent doing it justice.

And by the way, how can a 9.4 have that many stress lines on the spine and still get that grade?

I'd call it a 9.2 by that picture, based on most of the CGC 9.2's I see. I agree that many 9.0's look that good, you hunt for those when 9.0 is the goal. My recently sold 9.4 #14 looked like a 9.6, it had one barely visible hard spine stress.

 

Books with less unseen defects will look worse than the given grade.
