From the Wiki page i gather....not much.

This just lists all comics released in June 1938 and they're listed in alphabetical order..

How does one find actual dates ?

Can one find actual dates or do we have a seance and ask Edgar's ghost ?

Please no ectoplasms, these things creep me out.

The numbering on Funny Pages & Funny Picture Stories should be Vol.2, No.8 (which would be #19 actually), not that it matters much. :)

I know a lot of us hate some of the Centaur numbering, but they are what they are...and that's what they are...toot, toot... lol

There was a volume column in the data but I didn't include it in the export.

or do we have a seance and ask Edgar's ghost ?

Yeah, that will pretty much be what you have to do to help you narrow it down with that precision.

For example, Edgar's copy of More Fun 31 (which is the first book that has an ad for Action 1) was on the stands in Denver on April 1.

http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=138134

(incidentally, the Action 1 April 18 date is derived from the DC v Wonderman testimony, which I've always presumed meant its release date in NYC, which might be different when you're comparing info from elsewhere)

I would start with books cover-dated May and June, and start seeing what arrival dates you can track down. I bet you'll get it narrowed down with some work.

Good luck with the quest, I think it's an interesting idea. (thumbs u

1) If really interested, look at scans for arrival dates. This would be most

useful if all were from a single pedigree collections. (Arrival dates may differ

from city to city.) You will need to have multiple copies of a single title and

issue number with arrival dates to arrive at a consist "average date" which

you can use to compare one issue with another.

2) It is highly unlikely that there will be one issue. Typically a newsstand would

get a bundle of comics with multiple copies of multiple comics by different

publishers. Even at that early date, I would expect each date at which comics

arrived at a newsstand, the bundle would contain 2 - 6 different comics.

3) Have fun, and document all you find.

Well i may have found my answer.

Just found out about this website.

This lists all the comics that have a cover date, but were actually on sale sometimes before.

So you can look by publishers, cover month and ...publication date.

Heres the page for Action comic 1.The on sale date for it is May,3rd 1938.

http://www.dcindexes.com/timemachine/gallery.php?month=6&year=1938&type=cover&order=date&site=all

You can see the 5 last comics that came out before first Supes..Listed on sale date as May 1,1938 were:

Comics no 8

Crackajack funnies no 1

Funnies 21

These 3 were from Dell

And 2 from United Features,

Comics on parade 3 and Tip Top comics no 26.

So,if you have any of those ,a fantastic new trivia bit has now been added.

According to this guy.

Havent checked credentials and everything. And havent written to him yet.

A few missing from the GCD list that I found in ComicBase:

May 1938 Cover Dates

Comics on Parade #2

Feature Book #20 (The Phantom)

The Funnies #20

King Comics #20

Tip Top #25

June 1938 Cover Dates

The Comics #8

Famous Funnies #47

The Funnies #21

King Comics #27

Tip Top Comics #26

Also, not to put a damper on a great idea, but keep in mind that success in 1938 was very different than success in 2012. National Periodical Publications was unsure if they had a hit on their hands for months after Action #1's release. Superman didn't become the monthly cover feature until issue #19 (five months after Superman #1) and only got his second cover appearance on Action #7.

I don't know that anyone could rationally argue that Action #1 didn't change the face of the comics business but at the same time, it took months for the ripples to be felt across the industry.

Again, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just pointing out the way it was.
