I wonder if anyone ever actually got hired by Marvel using that book or was it just a cold blooded money grab on hopeful artists.

Money making idea: Post flyers: Looking for the next RAP star!!! $100 entry fee!!

You would get so many entrants your mind would blow up.

Why can't it be both?

In 1983, Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter created the Marvel Try-out Book to draw new talent into the comic book industry. The contest involved a deconstructed comic book in which contestants could complete the comic and submit it to Marvel. The winner would be awarded a professional assignment with Marvel.

At 27 years old, Mark Bagley entered the contest and won first place for penciling. This led to a series of low profile penciling jobs including jobs for Marvel's New Universe line and backup stories in Captain America. A majority of his work during this time was for the first series of Marvel Universe Trading cards.

Yea and Mark Bagley has been super successful too. He's still going strong. He also defined Spider-Man for two generations- Amazing in the 90s and then Ultimate in the 00s. That is pretty cool, IMO.

He had that contest in the 'Bag'

Man, I guess everyone here has probably already read The Walking Dead.

Unfortunately I'm stuck at work on this beautiful Friday so I'm not able to post anything new until this evening. However, I'll go ahead and post up a couple of offers from my last PIF to see if anyone is interested in the meantime. All offers are shipped free in the US and the first $20 covered anywhere else:

Offer 1: Scalped starter lot. I started this run but don't think I'll ever finish it. If you've been thinking about putting together this series here's a great start: 3-5, 11-18, 21, 23-30, 32, 37, 39-43, 45-52, 55-58 (39 books out of the 60 issue run) All issues will come individually bagged and boarded (I just need to do some rebagging).

Offer 2: Thief of Thieves lot - 1-14 is pictured but I have 15-18 also I will include. #1 is the Image firsts reprint and #4 is a 2nd print. The rest are all 1st prints.
