JIM #96 (G+/VG-) $25 NOW: $15

• Nice colors & surprisingly good gloss.

• Page quality off-white.

• Staples are nice & snug into the centerfold & centered. Lower staple exhibits some rust

• The biggest defect is that the cover is loose at the bottom staple and there is about a 1" tear in that area. This is not a spine split, though.

• Book suffers from a fair amount of edge-wear. (small creases & bumps & some pre Marvel chipping on the open edges.

• Some evidence of halo edge-tanning on interior covers.

• A nice, solid reader copy.

JIM #84 (CGC 7.5) off-white pages (old, old blue label)

Asking Price: $1500 NOW: $1,375

No GPA sales in the last 90 days. 1 sale this year at $1545. Five sales total in 2010 & 2011, with only one below $1,500.

I bought this book at the dawn of the CGC era from Marnin Rosenberg. I've had it 9, 10 years or so.

• Diagonal upper-right corner crease, front cover, is the killer defect. Approx. 1-3/4" in length, into the Comics Code Authority.

• Rich color strike & appears to have nice gloss.

• Top & bottom spine corners are slightly abraided.

• Approx. 8 spine ticks - looks like about 5 break color & 3 don't.

• Back cover very clean. Approx 2 spine ticks/stresses that do not break color.

Note: There is a bit of a glare from my scanner in the dark blue box area. Again - colors on this cover are nice and rich.

And now the #83.

Signed by Stan Lee. (Signature obtained by me.)

Journey Into Mystery 83 restored (VG-/VG) [looks 'Fine' at first glance]

Asking Price: $1,500 THEN: $1,275 NOW: $1,100

(close-up of restored piece - front cover exterior view)

JIM83-cov2.jpg

(close-up of restored piece - front cover interior view)

Journey Into Mystery 83 restored (VG-/VG)

• Restoration includes piece replacement on right edge of cover.

• Resto is most likely amateur, but well-done for what it is. This is very secure.

• Piece is approx. 7/8" long x 7/16" wide at its largest measurements - but piece is shaped more like a thumb-tip

• Tape-like substance used on inside cover to help secure resto piece. But does not feel thick at all, like a piece of scotch-tape, although it is translucent.

• I would assume some sort of trim on resto to obtain smooth matching edge, but it is very difficult to tell, as the overhang is consistent up the edge of the book

• I placed the #83 over the top of my CGC'd #84 & the widths look similar (see photo)

JIM83-cov3.jpg

• Other major defect is insect-type 'chew' damage. Size is approx. 3/8" wide x 5/16" long at largest on back, top left corner

• Insect damage goes in the back 12 pages & becomes smaller as the damage goes inward (see photo)

JIM83-cov4.jpg

• The rest of the damage to the book is primarily edge wear, in terms of small tears, spine ticks (spine), and approx. two 1/8" chips. Top spine corner has 1/8" chip out.

• There is a hint of a slight diagonal bend to the middle of the book that begins at the very end of the 'Y' in Journey, runs through Thor's midsection & into the 'A' of Saga at the bottom of the book. You only really notice this if you tilt the book back & forth under the light, as it is very light.

• Excellent color strike and gloss

• Page quality is most likely cream to off-white (possibly just off-white)

• Back cover is nice and clean

• Staples are snug into the spine & centerfold & perfect (no rust evidence)

• Signed by Stan Lee. I obtained this signature in 1994, I believe.

The resto & insect damage are unfortunate to be sure, but it presents very well.

If you have any questions on the Journey #83 (or any book for that matter), please feel free to drop me a PM.

I do have two other pre #90 JIMs that might become available. If they do, I will post them here.

Thanks!

JIM #86 (CGC 7.0) white pages

Asking: $450 - $12 for re-holstering = $438 NOW: $400

There is no GPA sales data on a 7.0, since 2010. However, this price is in the middle of the 12-month average of a 7.5 and a 6.5.

• Outer shell/case has a crack on the back, near the top right side. It runs parallel with the top edge, about 3/8" from the top & then stops midway, where the white sticker is

• I would take $12 off the top for a re-holster

• There is a date stamp between 'Journey' and 'Mystery' on the cover (Sept. 12, 1962)

• Top left corner of spine has a slight abrasion

• Small 1/16" x 1/16" chip out of top edge, back cover, about 1" from spine corner

• There is a printer's crease in the dark words 'THOR' on the front cover. It is possible that there is a small tear at the end of the crease on the 'H' in 'THOR.' But this is speculation on my part, since I purchased this copy already slabbed.

• The book looks nicer than a 7.0 - and I know everybody says that! It is possible that there is an interior defect that dings the book down a bit.

This copy looks much like an 8.0, based upon what I can see. Book is NOT pressed to my knowledge.

A couple of Strange Tales additions...

StTalesANN1F.jpg

StTalesANN1X.jpg

Strange Tales Annual #1 (Good-plus) $60

• One of Marvel's tougher annuals, from 1962. This may be their first annual (unless Millie the Model has it beat).

• Great color strike & nice gloss.

• Page quality is a springy off-white.

• Date stamp on front cover: JUL 24, 1962

• The worst defect with the book is moisture rippling along the spine edges, front & back covers. Moisture stain near '25¢,' approx 1/2" diameter.

• Foxing evident on interior front & back covers.

• Staples exhibit a little rust. The bottom staple shows more than the top.

• Top staple, bottom prong & bottom staple, top prong both have poked a small hole, each, in the back cover. Staples are secure, but not bent perfectly inward.

• 3/4" tear, bottom of spine. 1/4" tear, top of spine.

• 3/8" tear, horizontal on spine, about 1-3/8" up from bottom edge.

• Spidey's 4th appearance & pre-dates FF Annual #1.

• Excellent color strike & gloss.

• Page quality a nice off-white.

• Date stamp on front cover: MAY 11, 1962 (should've been 1963!)

• Staples are nicely secured, but there is a hint of rust on each one.

• 1/2" diameter stain between 'PAGES' and the 'G' in 'STRANGE.'

• 1/4" tear, bottom of spine.

• 1/8" tear, open edge near the middle, front cover.

• 1/8" tape pull on Spidey's right foot.

• Two small stains (coupon area) back cover. One is approx. 3/8" in diameter, the other is approx. 1/8"

th_MOVED.jpg

Batman 242 (NM-/NM) $45

• Great color strike & gloss

• Page quality off-white to white.

• Staples nicely centered & holding steady.

• Small amount of NCB stress - open edge, back cover

• I believe this could press out of the NM- borderline range and into solid NM, maybe better... but of course nothing is guaranteed there.

• Purchased from Richard @ Bedrock years ago

th_MOVED.jpg

Detective #411 (F+/VF- range) $35

• Pages look cream to off-white

• Small, light impact bend about 1/2” from bottom of spine, front cover...

... leads to 3 hairline creases. one is 7/16” long, one is 5/16” long, one is 1/2” long. These are right near the bottom left corner.

• Tiny, light impact ding/bend on bottom edge of cover, NCB

• Hairline scratch in black area, next to assassin’s right elbow

• Hint of a diagonal crease/bend, top cover edge, near issue number... then nothing, then barely picks up again in ‘Batgirl’ and assassin’s blade

• Back cover, open edge: worst defect. Bug chew, approx 2” long x 1/16” wide. Goes in 5 pages in the back.

• Another hint of a diagonal crease/bend on back cover - goes through red-headed girl, from open edge to bottom, approx 4” long.

• Very light fingerprint can be seen on back cover, near large yo-yo, in the gloss, if book is angled back & forth in the light

• Approx. 2 NCB spine ticks along back cover

Just an update:

I will be able to respond to PMs throughout the week, but I will most likely be away from the computer for the upcoming holiday weekend.

This Thursday is the last day I can ship books, for this week.

More books will go up after the holiday weekend, starting with some Spidey slabs.

Thank you!
