Looking at purchasing Amazing Spider-Man #9, can use some help!

Ok so I found two diffeent #9,s on ebay for the same exact price. They both have their own defects, but I am wondering which one is worth it. Prices of comics are $220.00 each.

I really like this one, but the small tear in the back is making me think it is not worth the price:

Here is the other. So if the tear would bring it down to a 2.5 CGC grade I am probably better off with this one as it has already been graded.

So what do you think? Is either worth the money, or should I just hold out for a better one on ebay? Thanks for all of the help!

Just all depends on what you like my friend. Slabbed books versus not, what defects bug you, etc.

I would spent a bit more and try for something in the 5.0-6.0 range minimum (where the books start to present as not "beaten up", but to each his own!)

The CGC graded copy is at least complete and unrestored. The raw copy could have undisclosed restoration or have missing pages.

Either way they are both overpriced. Before buying check ebay's complete auctions to compare.

For instance, here is a nicer copy that sold for $175.

Also check Heritage Auctions archives, all of their auction sales are archived - it's an incredible resource

Here is the initial search page, 381,000 plus archived comic and OA auctions

Here is a search of Heritage's archives, key words Amazing Spider-man 9

Here is a Heritage graded ASM 9 in VG that went for $191. I would much rather deal with Heritage - good graders - trusted auction house rather than an unknown ebay seller - many ebay sellers can't grade or don't disclose restoration.

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions please ask

The 12 month GPA on Spidey 9 for anything from 2.5 to 4.0 hovers in the $200 - $240 range. I'd go for something a bit nicer I think.

......of the two copies shown, I would much rather have the first. White cover with LOADS of gloss. It would be a fantastic book in hand for lower grade. That being said, a CGC 6.0 could probably be had for a hundred or so more and you wouldn't be perpetually fantasizing about an upgrade. GOD BLESS....

First, great advice on the prior posts, especially the current GPA ranges. Remember that the GPA ranges are based on graded -- not raw -- copies. The raw copy that you're looking at which might by a 4.0 -- if you grade it -- will add another $50 to your cost basis if you end up grading it, so comparing apples to apples on GPA, the raw book should really cost less than $220.

I am a long-time ASM collector. Between those two copies, personally, I would wait. There are plenty of copies of ASM 9 in this world. You can get a more attractive copy at, I think, a slightly better price if you're patient. Conversely, if you pay a little more than $220, you can get a higher graded book (something in the 4.5 to 5.0 range). Monitor HA.com and commicconnect.com for auctions where you might get a great price depending on bid activity.

If you want to swoop in for the kill now, look at Metropolis' page at http://www.metropoliscomics.com/bookSearch.php?searchType=advanced&title=amazing+spider-man&issue=9&search.x=0&search.y=0.

They have a # 9 in raw 4.5 with off white pages for $236 and a 4.0 with white pages for $208. Both are discounted 15% of their initial list, which shows market demand for the lower grade copies has tapered recently. Use these discounts to your advantge. I've been buying from Metropolis for over a decade and they generally get the grade right. (Sometimes they undergrade by .5; sometimes they overgrade by .5.) But if you're not satisfied with the grade, you have the right for a full refund within -- I think (please check) -- 10 days from the date you receive the book. No questions asked if you return the book.

Good luck!!! ASM 9 is a classic, classic cover. I show it to my 7-year-old son and it's his favorite of all the Ditko covers.

I absolutely agree with the above. When it comes down to it, wait a bit if you can and spend a little bit more to get an even better copy. I looked at recent sales over at Comiclink and I noticed the following sales:

A 7.0 copy sold for $513. A 6.5 sold for around $400 a few months ago.

Toss a few more bucks in and you will get a much nicer copy.
