Is there a top 100 Bronze Comics list?

121 posts in this topic

Here's my first swag at part of a list...

far from in order

11 Silver Surfer #1 1st Siver Surfer (own title)

12 Silver Surfer #4 Iconic Cover

29 Invaders #1 1st Invaders

43 Marvel Super Heroes #13 1st Ms Marvel

I think this list is a good start, but I can't see including the Surfer books or MSH as Bronze books since they came out in 1968, even if the beginning of the BA is a subject of debate.

BTW, the first appearance of the Invaders was in Avengers #71.

I also think it is dependent on your operational definition of the word 'Top" is.

Best story?

Most valuable?

Most collected?

I guess I meant "keys" so if someone on the boards said they had the best bronze age collection what are the 100 key books that you think should be in their collection if they want to think they have the best/top Bronze age collection...

Buddy, you are the original poster/requestor for this list. However, without a clear definition of a 'key' bronze age book, the list you will receive will contain less merit than it should. So, perhaps you can clarify what you meant by a Bronze age 'Key' book?

100 most popular and 100 best comics from the bronze age (art, story) would be very different list.

1st issues and 1st app seem to be tops on the list but these are not usually the best issues for the story, there is usually much better issues out there.

I'm a fan of Rocket Raccoon, but if there aren't 100 Bronze Age comics that are more key than Hulk #271 then there's not much point in even having a top 100 list in my opinion. I just think there comes a point where the comic in question are no longer keys at all, so if there are only, say, 71 keys in the Bronze Age then we shouldn't force the question by trying to make it a top 100 list.

Again, I like Rocket Raccoon, but a minor character getting a slight price boost because of movie speculators does not equal key in my personal estimation.

 thats what I get... 1st invaders should read "1st in own title"... did you have an issue with the Ms Marvel? Is it SA too? Oh I see.. MSH13 is first appearance of Carol Danvers, not Ms Marvel... give myself another one

Hulk 271 was in May of 82 for a cover date. so it makes it in based on ebays deliniation of the end of the copper age...

has there been talk in the past about when the copper age ended? COIE? Dark Knight? That'd put it out to 1986.

Personally, I don't consider Avengers #71 to be the first Invaders. We had a discussion about this on one of these forums recently; since it came out like 8 years before the next appearance of The Invaders, I chalk this up to a Roy Thomas retcon special. And in Gianzt-Size Invaders #1, Thomas has an essay where he explains how he created the team and where the name came from and there's no mention of Avengers #71.

However, oddly enough, Giant-Size Invaders #1 actually came out before Invaders #1. I believe the Giant-Size issue was a tryout for an ongoing and when it sold well, they launched the regular series. So Giant Size Invaders #1 would actually be the first in own title for The Invaders (and in my opinion, their first appearance, though I know that is not universally recognized).

I'm not arguing the dates, I'm arguing whether this should be considered a key issue. For me, it's not really close to a key issue, much as I like Rocket Raccoon.

Spidey 96, 97, 98, 100, 136

Also, I think you meant Bats #227 (not Tec). Don't see why that wouldn't be included in the Top 100.

What is key about it? SIgnficant character introduced/dies? Character joins/forms a team for the 1st time?

ASM 96-98 - "Drug Books", No Comics code

ASM 100 - 100th issue of Marvel flagship title

ASM 136 -1st Harry as Goblin

Bats 227 - not really sure, but people love it

There isn't anything key about Bats 227, but the cover itself is arguably the best looking cover of the entire bronze age.

Oh, don't get me wrong...I do like the Bats 227 cover, although not as much as I like WW199 or ASM 100. While they all have nice covers, none are what I would consider keys.

I couldn't understand it either, but since returning to the hobby after a hiatus of several years, this is what I've found about Batman 227. Unlike Green Lantern, there is really is no definitive point between the SA and BA where Batman dropped the camp and became the Batman that we all know today. It was a slow evolution that spanned a few years. The cover for issue 227 has been reproduced in numerous magazines, books, documentaries, etc.. and has garnered a lot of attention, to the point where I think many collectors (even non-Batman fans) have accepted this issue to represent this period of transition. It is about as Gothic as Batman can get.

To a lesser degree, I think the advent of slabbing has shifted the emphasis a bit more towards great covers versus interior art. Either way, I've come to really love book and it sure as heck displays very well.

Creatures on the loose #10 (1st Kull by Wrightson)?

A shameless plug as I'll probably be sending this 9.2 TC pedigree off to CL in a few weeks. :)

Also, what about this one? An old favorite of mine.
