Is there a top 100 Bronze Comics list?

121 posts in this topic

80. G.I. Combat 138 1st appearance of the Losers

81. Witching Hour 1 (Fun fact: the evil witches later show up in Gaiman's Sandman)

82. House of Mystery 174 changes from superhero back to horror format

83. House of Mystery 175 1st Cain (who also shows up in Gaiman's Sandman)

84. House of Secrets 81 changes from superhero back to horror format (1st Abel? I can't remember)

I left these off my list only because they came out before 1970 and I was using that as my start date. Personally, though, I consider the Bronze Age to have started earlier -- late '68 or '69 -- and would consider all of these to be Bronze Age books, as well as some of the others I left off like Brave and the Bold #85.

Dates be damned! I think your gut is correct -- these are BA books. Any BA war or horror collector would go after these books.

Same with B&B 85.

Some others for consideration as we get closer to 100:

Adventure Comics #431 - Bronze Age Spectre run starts.

Avengers #112 - 1st Mantis. Laugh now, people are hoarding high grade copies of this book...

Detective Comics #437 - 1st modern Manhunter.

Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes #197 - Legion incorporated into the title, modernization of the team, and one tough book to find in 9.8.

Red Sonja #1 - a 9.8 just sold for $228 on eBay.

If magazines are being included wouldn't Marvel Comics Super Special #'s 1 & 5 (KISS) be worthy of consideration? I'm sure these sell at over $200 in top grade, plus there's the appeal to collectors of pop culture, music, etc.

Thor # 337 is from 1983, and I'm not sure where the stop date for inclusion on the list was set. Is this notable simply for the cover or was there an important story element?

Would these qualify?

DC Special #29 - The Untold Origin of the Justice Society

Iron Man #129 - Tony Stark deals with (and conquers) his alcoholism

hm

Did you mean Iron Man #128? I'd agree that's an important BA story for a top tier character.

Oh yeah, Thor #337 is the first Walt Simonson issue. Introduced Beta Ray Bill, began the Ragnarok epic and pretty much revamped the series with the start of the best run in Thor history.

It's a book that absolutely should be a key, but it's not worth any more now than it was in 1984. I don't think at present it measures up to most of our other suggestions, even though it may be one of the best stories on the list.

Whoops...yes #128; thanx for the correction... (thumbs u

Creatures on the loose #10 (1st Kull by Wrightson)?

A shameless plug as I'll probably be sending this 9.2 TC pedigree off to CL in a few weeks. :)

Also, what about this one? An old favorite of mine.

OK. Not sure when Chamber of Darkness came out, but I double checked my copy of Creatures on the Loose #10. It came out in '71 so this would make it an early BA book.

I'd add:

DC Super-Stars #17 to the list. (1st Huntress)

Detective #411 (1st Talia)

Conan #24 (1st Full Red Sonya)

Uncanny X-Men #120 (1st Alpha Flight)

And to expand out of the US, I'd include 1st appearances of V for Vendetta, Captain Britain, Miracleman, and Judge Dredd from the British mags.

Night Nurse? That's grasping at straws.

Giant-Size Creatures #1

The Cat #1

At least Greer Nelson and Hellcat stayed around longer.

It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but my feeling is that there is more interest out there in Night Nurse #1 than The Cat #1. The Cat you can still get in dollar boxes. Night Nurse on the other hand can be a pain to track down in any condition. The Cat #1 might be harder to get in ultra high grade because of the black cover, but my guess (and I don't have access to any historical sales figures to back this up) is that Night Nurse #1 will outperform The Cat #1 in every grade below 8.5.

I know it's not a mainstream book, so it's harder to judge against superhero stuff, but I think there's enough of an interest from romance collectors to call this a Bronze Age key.

I thought the list related to significance of the content, not necessarily resale value.

Heck, I bought both for 20¢ each (plus tax).

I'm not quite sure what the parameters of the list are, but my attempt was taking value, demand and collectability into consideration.

If we were going on content, on the other hand, I definitely would have had Night Nurse #1 above Hulk #181 just for starters. Wolverine is boring, but Night Nurse is a seriously excellent and underrated soap opera. (thumbs u
