Nice stuff.

Btw, I think its great that you're putting them up against the kirbys and whatnot. To me it should be about sharing and getting to see other collectors' cool stuff whether its worth 100 bucks or 100 grand

+1 Well said.

There are really three special ones that I was able to get this year!

The first is the Splash to Justice League #12 Page 1. I think it is the best team image that Jim Lee and Scott Williams did on the run..

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6099

The next one is a page to the Frank Miller Wolverine Limited Series. There really are not that many pages on CAF and I really am happy to be one of the owners of one of the pages from one of my favorite Limited Series.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6101

The next is one of my favorite commissions ever. I was lucky enough to get this at NYCC 2012 and love it. If you are a fan of the Wolverine Limited Series and Old Man Logan I think you will love it as well! Steve McNiven crushed it!!

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6102

I also was able to get two great covers. An amazing image of Batgirl by Ed Benes

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6100

and another great image of Captain America by Steve McNiven. I just love his work!!

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6106

Wishing everyone the best!!

This was my first year on CAF, so I'll focus on what was my rookie season. I'm going to focus on pieces that I bought this year (one I added in 2013, but had purchased before and just didn't scan before the New Year). I like new stuff, so this will not float everyone's boat:

1) Fatale 1 Cover

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=864909&GSub=127361

I think this is the 3rd cover I ever bought. It's without a doubt my favorite. The cover is sexy, spooky, weird and just brilliant. I love you, Sean Phillips

2) Powers 1 Cover

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=971686&GSub=137434

Artistically, it's not Michael Oeming's best piece (I actually think that some of the splash pages that I picked up this last year are better drawn. I'd hope so. Michael should have improved over the years). However, it's the start (and possibly the first published OA) for one of my favorite series of all time. I can't believe that I scored it and I'm happy that Court decided not to buy it.

3) YTLM 12 Cover

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=967180&GSub=127360

I don't even need to say anything. It's JG Jones and it's YTLM.

4) Transmet 34 Cover

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=934308&GSub=127363

Darrick didn't draw many covers to Transmet. It's not my favorite cover, but it's mine :-)

5) Chew 11, page 1

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=955833&GSub=127356

Hey, how can I not have a list without some Chew goodness. Rob's covers sell for the most, but most of his splash pages are better than some of his covers. This page is no exception. It's beautiful in only a way that a Chew fan could love.

Honorably mentions:

Ex Machina 26 Cover, Chew 29 Cover, Chew 21 p. 1, Chew 30, p. 15, Ex Machina 20 p. 8, Incognito 2 p. 2 (First Black Death!!), 100 Bullets 23 Cover

Hi all,

The year was a good year for me -

after a very sad 2011, the following year saw the birth of my daughter

and in the collecting department I managed to get my grails

(yes, surprisingly my grails are not from THE KILLING JOKE).

Here are my Best of 2012 entries, it was pretty easy to list as I only

have 5 pieces left from 2012.

As requested elsewhere, my "Best Of" list consists of links

directed to the original art posts on CAF:

Dan Jurgens - Justice League America / JLA house ad (1992) -

Death Of Superman Newspaper announcement art:

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=850712&GSub=109053

Jim Aparo - BATMAN #498 pg 19 - Knightfall -

Catwoman meets Bane:

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=865800&GSub=70956

Norm Breyfogle - Batman Shadow Of The Bat #2 page 13 -

1st FULL appearance of Mr. Zsasz:

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=871216&GSub=11941

Norm Breyfogle - Batman Shadow Of The Bat poster (1992):

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=849334&GSub=11941

Ron Frenz - SUPERMAN #123, pg 21-22 DPS -

1ST full appearance of the Superman Blue costume:

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=945945&GSub=136781

And my full Lowry gallery can be found here:

Hope you'd enjoy my picks and vote, and obviously comments are welcome as always !

Thanks,

Gal

Hi guys

The year of 2012 was a huge transition for me. I have made the decision to stop collecting my full WD slab run and am now 100% OA :)

1) Venom vs Carnage by Clayton Crain

What can I say besides if you do not have a Clayton Crain Commission you should!

2) Coastal Chaos by Steve Nazer

Since I collect more modern OA this is the first piece of art that brings me right back to 1987 ...simpler times

3) Michonne by EBAS

If you can handle the 5+ hour wait for an EBAS original get in line now!

Published art:

1) Walking Dead 21 cover

My main goal in my collection was to get a Tony Moore Walking Dead Cover..thanks to Chris (and Steve) this became a reality :)

2) Cursed Pirate Girl issue 3 pg 12 by Jeremy Bastian

Any art that you have to get a magnifying glass to see every detail is simply amazing!

Fine art

1) Grand-Guignol by Jeremy Bastian

Was able to get one of his non-comic pieces of art through the gallery that displayed his art in December. Another great example of the detail he puts into each piece he works on.

For me 2010 and 2011 were years where I felt I scored marquee pieces, cornerstones of my collection. When the smoke cleared on 2012, I had not added any "collection-defining" pieces, but I had added a lot of art, 23 pieces, from diverse genres and eras. And when it came to picking out my 5 top ones, I found that these pieces could all have made my top 5 list in any of those other years. Not necessarily the sort of pieces that will get 10k views and 45 comments on CAF, but my tastes have always run indifferent to the mainstream.

2012 Overall.

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetailSearch.asp?Yr=2012&GCat=3878

Bernie Wrightson – 30 Days of Night #2 Variant cover.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6233&GSub=1516

Frank Brunner/ Giordano – Marvel Premiere #14. Dr. Strange "God" Page.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6235&GSub=1516

Arthur Suydam – Painted Heavy Metal page from "Mama's Place."

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6236&GSub=1516

Milton Caniff – Terry & the Pirates, August 2, 1946. A lighthearted standalone

strip with some fantastic Caniff good girl art.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6234&GSub=1516

Matt Baker – Glory Forbes page from Rangers Comics. A classic Baker cheesecake

panel!

Published Covers

1. Superman The Man Of Steel Volume 3 TPB (2004) Cover by Jerry Ordway

Superman along with iconic characters Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and Hawkman, along with a character who has become part of the Superman mythos co-created by Ordway himself - Cat Grant. Kilowog and The Demon are just gravy. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=892291&GSub=122141

2. The DC Comics Guide To Digitally Drawing Comics (2009) Cover Superman by Freddie Williams II

If there will be a bible to digital comic art everyone will look back to in the future when digital art will have taken over traditional art, this will be "the" book that started it all. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=957685&GSub=122146

Published Splashes, Pin-Ups

1. Superman 372 (1982) Title Splash by Curt Swan

Nothing much going on here, just some Curt Swan Superman eye-candy in one of Swan's favorite poses to draw of Superman in flight. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=885218&GSub=122143

2. Total Justice 3 (1996) Title Splash (featuring Robin and Darkseid) by Denys Cowan and Giordano

There is just so much art and symbolism here. The human teenage Robin who is ready to attack wearing an armored battlesuit complete with weapon in his hand, is dwarfed by a calm standing god who is standing confidently oblivious to the teenager in front of him. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=864246&GSub=122146

Published Interior Panel pages

1. Super Powers (1985) Page 18 by Jack Kirby

This is "The King" drawing Superman, a few other DC heroes, and characters he created in Darkseid and Desaad. These are pure pencils - something rare for Kirby work. There is also a hint of his trademark Kirby Machinery drawings. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=888577&GSub=122143

Unpublished Other

1. Legion of Super-Heroes 38 (1987-2012) 25th Anniversary Alternate Cover with Mike DeCarlo inks and Chris Ivy colors

I have always wanted a cover to Legion 38 that better represented this unforgettable story which was the death of Superboy. I had the original inker ink it. Just pure indulgence on a personal fanboy fantasy. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=884577&GSub=129595

Those are it for now!

Thanks to a couple good friends, I got off my kiester and posted my "Best of" for 2012. It was a great year overall. Got to see lots of great friends, and meet new ones, and worked with and bought from some great artists.

On to the artwork

Here's a link to my Main Gallery: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=727

Here's a link to my Lowry Gallery: http://www.comicartfans.com/my/LowryRoom.asp?GSub=127

Choosing 5 pieces was tough but in the end these were some of the more satisfying pieces posted in my CAF in 2012.

Published Interior Page:

"Gaze Into The Fist of Dredd" by Brian Bolland

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6344

A truly iconic page that is a true personal grail, and perhaps Brian's most well known and remembered page of artwork in his long and illustrious career.

Published Interior Page:

Daredevil #181 page #34 Daredevil Vs. Bullseye by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6345

A Miller example with these two locked in mortal combat from the issue that rocked our world when it came out.

Published Splash Page:

Batman: Earth One Double Page Splash by Gary Frank & John Sibal

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6346

Gary Frank is a friggin' genius with a pencil, and I honestly believe his work on Superman and Batman are of the quality to be remembered and loved for decades to come.

In this DPS, Batman is desperately trying to save Barbara Gordon from the serial killer "The Birthday Boy". She's trapped inside Arkham Mansion (the story is set before it's the infamous prison) and Batman can hear her turmoil but can't navigate through the fun house interior to get to her. So he takes a shortcut through the wall just as Ms Gordon is about to meet her doom.

Published Cover:

Kiss Greatest Hits Vol. 2 Cover Art by Nick Runge

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6347

As a young boy in the 70's you were a KISS fan, you didn't have a choice. They were cool and fun and had a toy line and a comic book (PRINTED IN THEIR OWN BLOOD!) and were everywhere no matter where you turned.

Nick Runge captured the look and feel of the band in this cover.

Unpublished "Other":

Han Solo's Trophy Wall by Nick Runge

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=6348

I've been commissioning artists to do trophy wall pieces for over 7 years. After all this time, when an artist can make my jaw drop with his skill and execution it deserves a minute for me to pay it the high praise it's due. Such a fun piece and so many great touches were included.

Thanks for looking and I am enjoying seeing everyone else's postings. It's been a great year for us all.

Best,

Chris

Awesome stuff Chris.

Now I know this is a really stupid question, but can someone tell me how the Lowry works exactly? I've never partaken and I don't see an explanation on CAF.

I guess you pick five works you liked best out of the years acquisitions, and then what? They are voted on? Where are these vote results shown? Are there categories? I see that you, Chris, broke yours down into categories.

bought in 2012.

In the yellow section in the lower left there is a "Art by Year" section.

It breaks down when pieces are posted by year.

I will post instruction on where and how to go about voting for the Best

of before voting day.

If there are any problems in uploading images please e-mail Bill (

bill@...) and any questions about what can be uploaded

please direct to me.

Look forward to alot of great artwork. Let the art begin......

Re: Lowry

It's named after a well-known art collector who passed away unexpectedly. I didn't "know" him, I came much later.

To get a "Lowry," you first need to

  • Join comicart-l on Yahoo. It is free.
  • Join the ComicArtFans website. It too is free.
  • On your CAF profile, [CAF->Manage->Edit Profile], you should see a box labeled "Comicart-L Member:" Check the box.
  • Build your Lowry [CAF->Manage->Manage Gallery Preferences->Your Lowry].

As you add items to the Lowry, you will see at the bottom a pick that allows you to enter them into the "Best of 2012" competition. Pick the right category and activate the piece (another check box) and you should be good to go.

You can see all the entries by category on the Lowry Overview page - [CAF->Galleries->The Lowry Gallery]

The pick to enter the contest eventually goes away as do the picks to view the entries, but that doesn't happen until the voting is done.

Brian Peck sends out the instructions each year to the comicart-l to start entering your pieces and to vote. Bill Cox and his team do the computer magic part of it.

Does this help?

Always a challenge narrowing the art I bought throughout the year down to my 5 favorite pieces.

1) LUCIFER 33 Page 19 - Two collectors have been trying to put LUCIFER 33 back together for as long as I can remember. I was one of them. A couple of years ago I caved and sold the DPS I owned to the other collector that had 18 of the pages. But there was a catch, if he ever decided to part with any pages he would let me know. 2012 he contacted me and I was able to get a majority of the OA to one of my favorite single issues of all time :whee:

2) PREACHER Saint Of Killers 03 Page 24 - I got lucky and found 22 pages of this 24 page issue. This page is 1 of 22 favorites from this issue.

3) HOPELESS, MAINE - Personal Demons cover - Tom Brown does some fantastic art. Apparently, he HATES leaving any white spaces showing though, whether he is doing covers or interiors.

4) ARSENIC LULLABY TPB cover - Got this from a fellow board member. HUGE thanks (worship) . Looking for ANY Arsenic Lullaby/Douglas Paszkiewicz art :wishluck:

5) LA DUBLA - Cheated a 'little' here. This is the complete 8 page story "LAST THOUHGHTS" from Tom Haubrick. The story consists of 8 full page splashes. How can I choose just one? :makepoint:

Enjoy,

Mike
