Scanning a black comic cover

16 posts in this topic

Does anyone have any tips for scanning a black comic cover? I am having a lot of trouble with this one. Thanks.

Are you getting lots of white specks?

If so, try finding a program that has an "anti scratch" feature that helps smooth the image out and removes all those little white specks.

What you're getting is the same type of glare that someone gets when the light bounced off of a wavy inner well. It's probably going to take a different scanner to change that glare.

I think you have a few choices:

1. Take another scan and digitally alter the brightness/levels/whitepoint on the scanner side so those areas on the book don't show up as much as they do (I don't personally like this option because you are not showing a true scan of the book)

2. Leave the scan, because what is happening is the CCD array is picking up the subtle waves of the inner well/comic in the case that is being illuminated by the lamp of the scanner. You won't be able to control this because the book is slabbed.

3. Take a photo of the slab with a camera, which will not pick up the same details as your scanner does. (Best option, IMHO)

You can also try flipping the book upside down. Sometimes changing the way the light attacks the slab/book makes a difference, although I don't think that will do what you need it to do.

I was thinking that, too. That's probably the easiest thing to do before the other suggestions.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. (thumbs u

We've tried a few with no success so we'll go the digital route next.

In truth I can't scan a book so this was my wife's thread. She has been the only participant until now.

We'll post a scan once we take the digital image.
