Does she want a job in the industry, or to do her own project?

She may want to look at Scott McLeod's series of books on graphic storytelling. Her mileage may vary, though, depending on her experience/training.

Rachel Rising was mentioned -- Moore's Strangers in Paradise would be good to check out as well.

Chris Ware and Daniel Clowes' indy work is also worth checking out.

For mainstream work, the already listed suggestions parallel my own.

SAGA

Batman

for black and white definitely THINK TANK

Wormwood: Gentlemen Corpse. Art by Ben Templesmith who is also doing IMAGE's upcoming title 'TEN GRAND'. He has a cool grungy style which is great for horror books. He also did 30 Days of Night but I prefer his art in Wormwood

Also BONE! (which also happens to be my grail)

You guys are awesome.

Wish I could read more moderns.

Love And Rockets is an indie from my 80's age group that's terrific. But even the good stuff got by me as a teen. I didn't read the run until about 2 yrs ago, fell in love, & check out the avatar.

Strangers In Paradise has been on my radar for ten years.

I sent this link to my friend, so she's reading these recommendations directly from the thread.

Why CANT you? :)

we wont tell the CG Golden Girls if you do ;)

Hah. I read very little, or no Gold.

I have a large reading stack of fiction/non-fiction now. Within that stack are the following comics related books:

Matt Baker The Art of Glamour

Dave Stevens Covers & Stories

So I'm paying close attention to these selections myself.

In fact, it's looking like I might read what she reads.

Definitely a lot of what has been listed is great:

Rachel Rising- damn I fell so far behind on this series I'll never catch up in floppy form. TPB #1 is great though.

Aquaman (New 52)-Great IMO.

Scalped-Much muddier art, but moody and well done.

Thor-The series 2 volumes ago that starts with the Turner cover on issue #1. Art and story were great for awhile.

Conan(Dark Horse)-Some of these stories are super well written and drawn.

As above really:

Best for mine are -

Y The last Man

Scalped

Transmetropolitan

Powers

Watchmen

Ex-Machina

All long (60+ issues) and very different.

Come on back y'hear!

The Sword - Good example of a well-traveled (bordering on cliche) revenge storyline being told in such a way that it almost feels new again.

Revival and Rachel Rising - I can't recommend them enough, although IMO Rachel Rising is better overall. Although Revival gets the cliffhangers and suspense right, RR has a much more natural flow to the story.
