Phoenix Comic Con May 23-26

85 posts in this topic

The Phoenix Comic Con just keeps getting bigger every year. Definitely a Pop Culture event that is expected to draw over 40,000 distinct attendees this year. Here is the Con link:

Not as big of a draw for comics; however, Harley has a four booth set-up as do I along with Mike Dynes (booths 685,687,784,786). As always, we hope to see a few Boardies at the Con.

PM those want lists and I will hold until the Con.

I'm note sure what the scedule will look like but I will be giving my presentation again. Try to make it if you can. The title won't be the same, they just seem to call it whatever they want, so if you can't find it in the program, swing by the booth. I'll be throwing out some door prizes as well.

Coordinating Presenter’s Name: Michael Dynes

Proposed Session Title: Disturbed Bastards: An introduction to the history and influence of Comic horror magazines of the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Category: Comic History

Description:

This session will examine the historical foundations of black and white horror comics of the 1960’s and 1970’s including magazines published by Warren, Skywald, Eerie Publications and more. It will highlight the condition of the comic market at the time and explain how the censorship of the Comics Code Authority forced publishers to find a different medium. The underlying theme is that creativity will adapt and circumvent censorship. The presentation will discuss the work of well known comic creators such as Neal Addams, Frank Frazetta, Bernie Wrightson, and Richard Corben in the magazine medium. It will follow the influence of these magazines past their demise in the early 1980’s and note their influence on pop culture today. There will be a 40-45 minute entertaining presentation providing the history and implications of the issue. From there, the presenter will field questions from the audience. The presentation will conclude with a presentation from the presenter’s personal collection of some of the most interesting and bizarre horror comic magazine covers.
