What I am trying to say is the other other companies, like Atlas, Star and Harvey, were dripping with talent

but EC used stories by Feldstein, Craig and Bradbury and a host of other writers and produced a consistently good product,

e.g., this splash from Harvey's Chamber of Chills is oozing talent.

Beautiful LB Coles! :headbang:

It's hard to be at his or Bailey's level when it comes to pre-code horror covers but a number of the EC gang could do that on occasion as could Bill Everett.

So is that a Cole creation or did he take the skull from Matt Baker's art.

Interesting...the BBW #115 is from October 1952. When and where is that page from?

Judging from how it looks on the page, it seems like it was swiped from the Blue Bolt Weird cover. Note where the hand would have appeared in the hair.

I recently learned that this 3D splash (one color taken out for clarity) was reprinted in another comic. Don't remember if it was a St. John title but thinking it would be a Strange Terrors.

The splash by Baker is from All-Famous Police Cases #7 October 1952.

Speaking of Everett, I finally found a War job of his that I like \:o
(tsk)

There are much better stories than that. For example, he drew an excellent Valley Forge story for Young Men 20 and another Revolutionary War story for Young Men 19.

Sure ... but I don't own those issues yet  though I've picked up 18 issues I was missing from my still uncomplete Battle run. The pages above are from Battle 36.

Well that skull has been reused by Star in a couple of covers already and since All-Famous Police Cases was also a Star publication it makes more sense.

I wonder if it was an editorial choice to insert Cole's image over what was drawn originally?

Speaking of Star... Just picked up my first one (and only my second non-EC pre-code). Seemed a fair price, so I couldn't hold back. It's been about 6 months since my last purchase.

You need to delve more into the "other guys", I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

+1 Lots of great hidden stories out there. I love this cover too. Really bizarre stuff even for Cole. Look at how heavily shadowed the man's face is yet his hand is remarkable "lightly" drawn...I think these little quirks add to these covers. Look at the colors in that guy's face too! Wild stuff! :)

I've had my eyes on a couple of titles... not this one in particular, but the cover was too cool. Usually in these "skull painting" types of covers etc. the painting is the one with the skull - not the subject. Weird 'n' wild indeed!

Speaking of the other guys, Powell did great work for Harvey. Someone posted this scan of the original art or it came from the Heritage auction.
