I saw it over in Undead....worth posting here too! Excellent book buddy. I'm shocked you didn't already have a copy. Big congrats on a cornerstone Precide book. N e r V
The cut of this book made me have some concerns but after bouncing it around in my head I made an offer then got a counter offer and pulled the trigger. I'm getting closer to finishing the Senation "Mystery" run at least. This is the beginning issue and not a lot came up I liked. She's not perfect but she's mine now. That's a cool Alex Toth cover and the interior story, "Queen of the Snows" is one of his best.

So the Sensation Comics title was the forerunner to Sensation Mystery? I wonder if it was axed due to the code?

zzutak
So the Sensation Comics title was the forerunner to Sensation Mystery? I wonder if it was axed due to the code? The Code was not an issue here. DC's foray into the mystery genre began in 1951-52 with The Phantom Stranger (Phantom Stranger #1-6), Johnny Peril (Sensation #107-109 & Sensation Mystery #110-116), Dr. Thirteen, The Ghost Breaker (Star Spangled Comics #122-130), and the House of Mystery anthology title. I wouldn't categorize any of the content as "horrific" -- DC did not do graphic sex, violence, and gore. This was relatively tame stuff that involved ghosts, the occult, and the supernatural. Cool stuff to be sure (although it was way more popular back in the days when Gary Carter exerted a large influence on the hobby). But there just wasn't enough demand for four different mystery titles; so DC canceled two of the titles (PS and SM) and allowed one of the titles (SSC) to morph into a long-running war anthology (Star Spangled War Stories). Interesting, thx for the history! Funny thing is that after the CCA came into being, DC introduced House of Secrets in 1956 (I know that for a fact because I bought the first issue for a silver dime). N e r V
That's really awesome. I only have 2 issues left on completing my Star Spangled Comics #122-130 run. With things like Phantom Stranger,Congo Bill and Danger Trail being higher on my list to complete due to their rarity I've had less time to focus on House of Mystery and others. I have focused instead on staking ground in it and other titles by securing the number #1's first when possible. So Danger Trail #1, Mystery in Space #1, Strange Adventures #1, House of Secrets #1 and My Greatest Adventure #1 are on my bucket list.

zzutak
Thanks, guys. None of this stuff has the cachet of the more explicit horror titles, but I've always enjoyed a good ghost story.

jimjum12
New Brunswick Your OO on the New Brunswick collection must have been in his early 20's when he bought most of these off the rack. That would explain the wealth of PCH and the nice condition of almost all of the books. How many EC's were in there Stephan ? Were many SciFi books present ?
