By Mark Waid calling it Disaster Porn

Can someone explain to me what people are thinking by using the word "porn" like this? Waid isn't the first time I've heard this usage, but pornography explicitly entails sexual excitement. Is he implying that we're getting boners from collapsing buildings? :insane: I can only guess that he's gone through male menopause and can't remember the difference between regular excitement and the type he's getting at. :makepoint:

using porn the way Waid did is like using "-gate" to describe a scandal. Shprthand for a condition.

Porn arouses you, and you can get addicted to porn, and keep coming back for more.. (pun unintended) The comparison here is that Hollywood is now addicted to blowing things up, so that no matter how many times they do it, they come right back to doing it in the next film.

The kid with a cape scene bothers people? Really?

No, nobody in the thread has said it bothers them--we're just trying to figure out who he was emulating.

Interesting poll results so far.

MofSpoll_zps36126de6.jpg

MEAN = 7.3

MEDIAN = 8.0

MODE = 8.0

Even though there are some that feel strongly the movie was a bust, it appears to be scoring higher than that so far.

I am surprised at the results myself. I personally didn't like it, but it seems to be, at least on these boards, favorable.

I know I'm beating a dead horse but why oh why did you give a movie that you repeatedly stated you DON'T like, a 7of 10 rating?!?!?!

I think what he really meant is that he's going to tell us that he didn't like it 10 times, and he's got 3 to go.

The votes keep rolling in (10.0 x 1, 9.0 x 2, 8.0 x 3, 7.0 x 1, 6.0 x 1, 2.0 x 1, 1.0 x 1).

We seem to be tracking with IMDB's 8.1 score from 85,696 users. Interesting enough, that's 6,870 additional votes in one day, dropping the score from 8.2 to the current score. That's pretty impressive, as with an average score that many votes would change the results drastically if they the majority had been negative.

7 out of 10 for me, and that's being generous and not overly critical. Good film, entertaining, but some pretty big flaws. The overall effect probably outweighs enough for it to be a positive experience, but I certainly didn't leave this film dying to see it again the way I did Avengers. Now for spoilers:

The massive destruction doing the big fight scenes felt too video-gamish as many have pointed out and the lack of acknowledge of the huge death toll this would have caused contributed to that. It felt hollow and detached. As someone pointed out, the battle in Avengers would have had a similar effect, but there you got to see a number of scenes with civilians being effected and the heroes trying to save them -- it just felt more real. In MoS the destruction had no visible consequences and so had less meaning. I actual found myself tuning out during the big battle sequences.

I didn't think Lois was well-acted, but Boardwalk Empire guy playing Zod was cool, and Crowe and Costner were great (except the completely contrived tornado scene). Cavill was serviceable I guess, but not great. The women seem to dig him so that's a plus.

I'm okay with the darker take on the character--it's probably necessary, but I just didn't think it was very effective here because I didn't really care about anybody in the film. Not enough character development. I'm also okay with Supes killing Zod at the end at least in concept -- it seems pretty clear that they are planning to use this experience as the reason why he will swear to never take another life, so okay that might work. But I thought execution was poor. Again it felt forced and contrived. Why didn't the family just runaway when they saw the slowing moving eyebeams creeping their way towards them like the laser in Goldfinger. C'mon. It's like all the real humans in this film are just props.

The actual fight choreography was good though, despite the video game effect. I really liked the female villain (Faora?) and her speeded-up fighting scenes.

The shaky cam was overdone as a number of people have noted.

Again these were the flaws that bugged me but still overall it was a good film and entertaining, but only on a superficial level. It was good enough that I'm curious to see what they could do with a sequel, though I wouldn't have extremely high hopes.

Okay, who tossed out the 7.0 right after I posted the latest numbers?

:taptaptap:

Just kidding. It won't impact the Median and Mode.

:whee:

:shy:

lol

Some wil like it, and some won't. Every vote counts.

See I had the other reaction, I came out of MoS "dying" to see it again... out of the Avengers thinking, I can wait for the DVD to see it again.

That is how I felt as well even though I loved Avengers and actually liked it more (probably the comedy). It's probably due to the fact that the fight scenes were so fast in MoS. It's so nice that we don't have to sit through the Six Million Dollar Man running slow = fast or, CR as Sups moving super slow kicking someone = fast but it makes it hard to follow at times.

And with Avengers you had to sit through the boring scenes with Black Widow and Hawkeye (yawn) to get to the other good stuff with Hulk, Thor, IM and CA. At least with the DVD I can fast forward that .

Goyer is the writer of the Call of Duty : Black Ops video games, so that helps explain the aggressive military aspects present in the Superman film, and maybe also the disregard for collateral damage.

That explains a lot actually.
