1st Appearance of Doomsday??

262 posts in this topic

The CGC label for #17 reads "Doomsday cameo on last page" & #18 says,"1st full appearance of Doomsday" so I would consider #18 to be the 1st appearance.

It's the same thing with Wolverine's 1st appearance and Hulk #180/#181, he has a cameo in issue #180 but his first appearance is considered to be #181(and that is the issue that commands the big bucks).

Awesome!! Thanks guys for clarifying this for me!!!

Bought 2 of the man of steel #18 from my LCS today for $9, and went to look online and some said 17 and some said 18 on the 1st appearance had me worried.

Those 2 will be CGC bound!!

By the way Aggiez nice 9.8 you got there hopefully one of mine will comeback at that grade!

Thanks bud. My copy is pure nostalgia for me. Bought this copy during the Death of Superman craze back in the day.

Good luck with the submission!

Yeah, I am not looking to get any money off of this. Just to have in my collection!!

It's more like Web of Spider-Man #18, though I am a fan of Man of Steel #17. All you see are Doomsday's fists beating on the wall of the lab to get out.

But it is a really cool book to collect.

Agreed... Web of Spider-man #18 is a good comparison for Venom... it's just an arm and hand.

It's not like Hulk #180 because we see Wolverine in full view in Hulk #180... plus his name is mentioned about three times.

Hulk #180 is a full, clear appearance on a single page... so, "brief 1st appearance" is probably the best description.

Man of Steel #17 is just an arm and fist (still wrapped).

Similar "punch only" panels appear in other titles before Man of Steel #18.

(Adventure #496, Superman #73, etc.)

Man of Steel #18 does have full Doomsday action, but we technically can't see what he looks like yet.

He's got the green covering and goggles all the way through MOS #18.

So, his actual "appearance" is still unknown to the reader at the end of MOS #18.

Justice League of America #69 is next, but you can see more of Doomsday (arms)

on the cover than what actually is visible within the comic.

Superman #74 is the first time we can see (about half of) his face, uncovered arm, etc.

We know what Doomsday looks like, for the first time, over halfway through Superman #74.

As much as I love the book, I do not believe MOS #18 is Doomsdays first appearance. Since we see Doomsday's arm in previous issues, I'd count that as his first appearance. It does not matter that we only see a portion of him, it's still Doomsday.

Ex. The label on MOS 18 indicates "First full appearance". The label on ASM 256 reads "First appearance". Seems quite clear to me.......

my memory stinks but wasent the "panic in the sky" story line somehow tied into doomday for a while? is that not considered part of it now? or was it ever?

It was associated, but it was only speculation.

That connection is currently considered a "comic book urban legend".

Good times!

I was home about a month ago, digging through some longboxes that didn't make the move to Texas with me (due to the move being so quick), and found that my mom found some books from when I was a kid, and tossed them into my more recent collection. . . upon inspection, I found an Uncanny X-Men #129 (direct) and 134-137, along with everything on the list you provided from MOS #18 on. There are two copies of MOS #18 and I still have Superman #75 in the black polybag. I brought them all back with me.

I will keep these for nostalgia, along with the Knightfall storyline. There are some great covers in those two stories.
