Comic book store owner facing child pornography charges

Caledon Enterprise

A 43-year-old Bolton man previously charged with voyeurism has now had additional child pornography charges laid against him. Domenic Giorgio was charged with voyeurism in July, 2009 after a video camera was discovered filming the washroom in his Vaughan comic book store, the Dragon's Realm, located at 9661 Jane Street. On Feb. 4 he was charged with possession of child pornography in connection with materials recovered during the original investigation. The original incident saw a male and female customer, both 21 at the time, enter the store. The woman asked to use the washroom. She was followed by the storeowner, who entered an adjoining room while she was using the facilities. The accompanying man found this behaviour suspicious and went to investigate the washroom himself. He discovered a video camera on a tri-pod hidden on the other side of the room. The couple confronted the store owner and phoned police. There was a brief struggle between the reporting parties and the storeowner, resulting in two assault charges being laid in addition to the voyeurism charge.  Investigators seized a computer and various DVDs at the business following Giorgio's arrest. "The computer was seized at the store and they executed a search warrant to be able to take the computer from the store, and then they had to get another search warrant later to be able to look at the files on the computers," said York Regional Constable Rebecca Boyd. "It's the way we have the ability to present a thorough case to the courts." While the materials were originally seized in July, Giorgio was not charged until seven months later, on Feb. 4. "It took a lot of time to be able to go through those images. They're not exactly in the right format, either. Once they're seized they have to be looked at by our video services and then turned into the proper files, and then the investigator has to go through them," said Boyd. "It's not quite as simple as just uploading the images and then laying the charges. "You have to keep in mind, these kinds of investigations are very intense. There's a lot of information to go through, there's a lot of processes to be completed in order for it to be a complete case for the court." Although Giorgio is alleged to have had a camera videotaping the washroom of his store, no charges for creating child pornography have been laid. "There's no charges for that kind of offence at this time," said Boyd. "Right now the charge relating to the images is just for the possession." The accused was held in custody and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Feb. 4. "The production and distribution of child pornography directly promotes the abuse of children. Child pornography is the victimization of children to the fullest," reads a York Regional Police press release. "Parents are reminded to teach their children about safety on the Internet. Children should never give anyone their name, address, telephone number, computer password, or any other personal information on the Internet without parental or guardian consent. They should stay out of all chat rooms and websites that are not first approved by their parent or guardian. Children should be supervised by an adult when they are online and not have access to a web camera, especially in their bedroom." To access an educational video and further information on Internet safety as part of the York Regional Police Be Net Aware program, or to report child pornography on the internet, visit www.yrp.ca. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sandra Staley of the York Regional Police Crimes Against Children Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7075. Something is up with that link. My computer came up with a huge warning when I clicked on it. Needless to say I told it not to open the link...

For twenty minutes I was googling "toronto + comic store + masturbating" - this was all I could find after being told a story I didn't believe.

:sorry:

A 43-year-old Bolton man charged with voyeurism and assault last July has now been charged with possession of child pornography as well.

The charges stem from evidence seized during the original investigation, said Det. Sandra Staley.

“It could be in the hundreds,” Staley said, referring to the number of victims. “I’m just on the tip of the iceberg and have some 118 DVDs to view.”

Domenic Giorgio was originally charged following a complaint from a couple who were at the accused’s Vaughan comic business store called Dragon’s Realm.

The store, located at 9661 Jane St., just south of Major Mackenzie Dr., is a popular spot for comic book fans, and also sells bathing suits and Halloween costumes.

“The store is surrounded by schools and is quite close to Canada’s Wonderland, so there is a strong demographic of females who come to this store,” Staley said.

A female victim went into the washroom to try on a bathing suit and the business owner, who was pestering her to try on the clothing, quickly followed her into an adjoining room, said Staley.

Her boyfriend, who thought the owner’s behaviour was suspicious, went into the washroom to investigate, Staley said.

“He thought the owner was probably just using a peephole to look at his girlfriend, so he searched the washroom and found a fake electrical outlet,” Staley said.

The fake outlet was actually hiding a digital camcorder on a tripod that pointed towards a full-length mirror in the washroom, she said.

“(The boyfriend) ripped out the mini-cassette and had an altercation with the owner,” said Staley.

Staley said the owner is denying the charges and claims that the owner used the camcorder to prevent theft of his merchandise.

In July 2009, Giorgio was charged with two counts of assault and one count of voyeurism.

“But he went one step further and made these DVDs,” said Staley.

The DVDs show both the front and backs of several women in the washroom and the camcorder was used to zoom into certain body parts, police say.

Police have yet to determine how many years of footage are on the DVDs, but say the children appear to be anywhere from 10 to 14 years old.

“We have a lot of material to look through,” said Staley.

Giorgio turned himself into police on Thursday morning.
