Griff's Gold Goals for 2014

9 posts in this topic

So another year has come and gone. This year I didn't pick up many books. I decided to save up for 2014 and make a big push there.

The biggest thing I have decided to do is focus my collection down. Simply saying "I like Schomburgs" is WAAAAAAY to vague and near impossible to collect in a meaningful way. So i've decided to focus on the Stylized Schomburg covers. I am not sure if I will liquidate my Silver age x-men collection to help accomplish it or if I will just hold onto those. The rest of my books I will be liquidating.

I hope to keep updating this as I pickup books or miss out on them on auctions ect over the course of the next 12 months. The biggest thing I am looking forward to is the Reno Con in Nov next year. its been 16 years since my last con !

so my hunt list for the upcoming year is

Fighting Yank #23 "doesn't really fit my theme, but I miss the one I had and still regret selling it. It's one of my fav covers"

1 Church book "again doesn't fit with my main goal but I LOVE the story behind the books and would be honored to own one.

Will I get them all..... I Doubt it, but if I can pick up 5-7 of them I will be a happy camper :)

Wish me luck

Griff

I'm doubtful these Brick Bradford covers are based on an actual airbrush by Schomburg. I think it more likely that this was typical b&w line art that was then colored. Having a color gradient where the color varies in intensity is something that could be done as part of standard color design.

I actually have an undercopy of one of those that I keep thinking of selling but never get around to.

So I guess im gonna have to start liquidating books. next question I have to figure out is, do I bother CGC'ing some low grade books and mid/high grade silver age books to help pay for the transition? for example here are a few books that are going to have to go now

ABC #15.

This is a beautiful copy except for that strange tape pull on the cover.

The Black Terror #12

I love the cover but the mold spotting has always been its down side. "ive even kept it separate from my other books out of fear"

Not sure about whether CGC'ing these would be worthwhile, but that ABC 15 is an interesting cover. Super heroes take on the black market! Counterfeiting gas ration stamps! How could anyone stoop so low! :sumo:

Wonder if this is the only GA cover to deal with the perceived evils of the black market during WW II? hm (I know there are other covers that show or refer to rationing.)
